“In the modern age, the #reactionary cannot hope to formulate arguments that will convince his opponent, because he does not share any assumptions with his opponent.

“Moreover, even if the reactionary could argue from certain shared assumptions, modern man’s dogmatism prevents him from listening to argumentation.

“Faced with this situation, the reactionary should instead write #aphorisms.

One thing that fascinates me about English, especially the dialect spoken in corporate America is that as long as something follows a certain cadence, people will consider it wise regardless of the actual content of the statement.

For example, I recently saw this on someone’s whiteboard: “If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door. “

What? Lack of knocking has no relationship to the presence or non-presence of a door. It means no one is using the door you already have. Building a new door will not increase the number of knocks. It will only confuse people.

And yet, because it followed the general pattern of a certain kind of inspirational saying, someone thought it was valuable enough to take the time to write it out longhand. Amazing.

The Aphorisms of Franz Kafka, 2022

A splendid new translation of an extraordinary work of modern literature—featuring facing-page commentary by Kafka's acclaimed biographer
In 1917 and 1918, Franz Kafka wrote a set of more than 100 aphorisms, known as the Zürau #aphorisms, after the Bohemian village in which he composed them. Among the most mysterious of Kafka's writings, they explore philosophical questions about truth, good and evil, and the spiritual and sensory world.
