Noem also demanded info “regarding each #student #visa holder’s maintenance of at least the minimum required coursework to maintain nonimmigrant student status.”

“The failure to comply with the student records request will be treated as a voluntary withdrawal,” Noem wrote in the letter.

Update. "Faculty Letter to #Yale University Administration"
sites.google.com/view/yalefacu

"We stand together at a crossroads. American universities are facing extraordinary attacks that threaten the bedrock principles of a democratic society, including rights of free expression, association, and academic freedom. We write as one faculty, to ask you to stand with us now. We urge you to: …Resist and legally challenge any unlawful demands that threaten academic freedom and university self-governance…Protect science and other research at Yale from funding cutoffs… Defend the rights to free speech on campus…Work purposefully and proactively with other colleges and universities in collective defense."

#Columbia is at least partly reversing course on its capitulation to #Trump demands.

"Columbia University, which has faced criticism for not striking a more defiant stand against efforts by the Trump administration to set its agenda, showed signs late Monday of adopting a tougher tone. In a note sent to the campus, the acting president [Claire Shipman] pledged that the school would not allow the federal government to 'require us to relinquish our independence and autonomy.' The message came less than 12 hours after #Harvard became the first university to refuse to comply with the administration’s demands."

Claire Shipman, Columbia’s acting president, issued a statement late Monday, hours after the president of Harvard offered a defiant response to demands from the Trump administration.

“Part of Trump’s fight with the Supreme Court is an attempt to demonstrate dominance…, but institutions, as well as the courts, are standing up to him. With Trump having won concessions from Columbia University…, other universities are banding together to defend education, academic freedom, and freedom of speech. On Monday, Harvard University took a stand against the administration’s demand…”

'Terms like “quislings,” “Thermidor,” “Vichy,” and “submission” have circulated widely in articles denouncing #Columbia’s surrender, zeroing in on betrayal as the proper note to strike. But it is not really betrayal when those committing the action have no investment in the principles betrayed.'

Honestly, #Trump is sounding more & more deranged.

Ignoring the bizarre word salad “terrorist inspired/supporting ‘Sickness?’”, what he is directing the #IRS / #DOJ to do to #Harvard in his post breaks SEVERAL laws.

He cannot direct either agency. It is outside his scope of power.

Congress has the power of the purse.

#AcademicFreedom is essential to the #Constitution’s guarantee of #FreeSpeech.

Here's a letter that I sent to Princeton University President Chris Eisgruber a few weeks ago urging the University to stand firm against the Trump administration's attempt to turn it into the Ivy version of the New College of Florida.

I'm pleased to see Harvard and MIT join the conflict.
