By #law, the #State Dept releases annual reports for every country, & they traditionally follow one basic outline. The cuts ordered in the #Trump admin memo are not targeted at specific countries. Rather, they eliminate entire categories of #abuses from all the reports.

But some deletions are more noteworthy than others. The Trump admin recently negotiated the transfer of #immigrants from the #US into #ElSalvador's notorious #prison system.

Protests work. A female rocker & her band were arrested after she gave a virtual concert (no live audience) w/ her hair showing. Public outcry got them all released the next day. Protests like two years ago, about the "hijab law", are the last thing #Iran wants now, so they postponed the new hijab law taking effect. Protests work.

“Don’t portray us as a band of beggars coming to demand reparation. […] I think the Europeans have obligations to us, like all the unfortunate, but especially to us for harms that they caused. That is what I call reparation.” These words of Aimé Césaire, renowned Martinican author of “Discourse on Colonialism”, still resonate everywhere in the world 71 years after they were published.

The issue concerns 70% of the world’s population, either as a citizen of a colonizing country or as one of the colonized, according to French #history professor Bouda Etemad, author of the book “Crimes and Reparations, the West faced with its colonial past”. The colonized and their descendants, he writes, have the right to demand #reparation from the #European powers for the harms these States committed over a period of 500 years, from the “discovery” of #America by Christopher #Colombus to independence in the second half of the 20th century. Forced labour, slavery, persecution, executions, extermination, bombardments, looting and forced cultural #assimilation: the list is long of violent #abuses that accompanied #colonization in #Africa, the Near East, #Asia, the Americas, #Oceania and northern #Europe.

This special focus concentrates on the period known as the “second #colonial empire” which from 1815 marked the new #expansionism of the Western powers until the wave of independence in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

#Respect for #family doesn't mean you need to tolerate #abuses from family. Just because someone is related to you - does not mean you need to keep associating with them, if they are violating many of your core values & are #bigots. If they refuse to make changes to become more humane people, I won't keep tolerating their ignorant bullshittery.

These are family members who used to tell me & my parents that I'm stupid & foolish for being a lifetime community volunteer. They made fun of me when I tried to organize my first socks & gloves drive for homeless folks, at age 10 too. They're uncompassionate jerks. They completely forget where the hell they came from. They value money over #humanity.

Fuck them. Until they learn to do better, I ain't gonna let them anywhere near me or my immediate family.
