MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History June 2, 1863: Backed by three gunboats, Harriet Tubman and her force of 300 black soldiers, freed 800 enslaved people in the Combahee River Raid, South Carolina. Furthermore, they set fire to the plantations and destroyed millions of dollars-worth of stores, cotton and homes of the wealthy, without losing a single person. Additionally, it was the only military engagement in American history where a woman, black or white, “led the raid and under whose inspiration it was originated and conducted.” Tubman devised her war strategy after repeatedly penetrating across enemy lines and spying on Confederate troop movements. In the aftermath, Confederate Captain John F. Lay said, “The enemy seems to have been well posted as to the character and capacity of our troops and their small chance of encountering opposition, and to have been well guided by persons thoroughly acquainted with the river and country.” Most Americans know of Tubman’s role in the Underground Railroad. However, she was also a spy for the Union Army. MikeDunnAuthor<p>Today in Labor History June 2, 1780: The Gordon Riots began on this date in England and lasted through June 9. The riots began as a pogrom against Catholics. However, it grew into a mass worker insurrection that included ex-slaves, impressed sailors and debtors, English, Irish, Italians, Germans and Jews. The insurrectionists liberated two thousand prisoners and destroyed every major prison in London. They wrote on the prison walls, “Freed by the Authority of His Majesty, King Mob." Rioters also destroyed the homes members of the ruling elite, as well as toll houses and the Bank of England. The rich fled the city in terror. It was the most destructive protest in the history of London. The military was called in. They slaughtered up to 700 workers. The reality is however that "a system cannot fail those it was never designed to protect" and the lack of legislative progress to protect our civil rights from police abuses falls on the elected reformers not advocates and abolitionists in the streets. For a larger liberal establishment in the United States that had no answer for Trump at the ballot box to point at the Kelpto Kaiser’s racist authoritarian regime and declare the movement against police violence and white supremacist policing has failed, is one part deflection, and one part scapegoating. It is ultimately reductive to argue that the 2020 George Floyd protests were by themselves responsible for the broader fascist “white-lash” driving Trump’s second rise to power in an already white supremacist America, and disempowering to believe organized resistance against that white supremacy accomplished nothing merely because a state that was never designed to protect racialized people, or the labor class in general, refused to take meaningful action against police violence. Those hard-fought hours in the streets opened a broad swathe of society’s eyes to the racist and violent nature of American policing, taught communities across the globe how to organize in the face of state-sanctioned repression, and helped make so many young people “woke” that the fascist Trump regime is trying to make “wokeness” illegal. 1 Aby vs 100 Gorillas<p>No matter what we look like or where we come from, most of us have known the pain of seeing loved ones struggle—friends who have dealt with substance use, children who have<br>made rebellious choices, neighbors in over their heads trying to make ends meet. We also share some basic desires: that our communities would be places where people can overcome their struggles and be treated as equals. Where we are free to care for our families, find success, and be recognized for our best moments—not just our worst.</p><p>But for too long, we’ve allowed police and prison lobbyists to convince our leaders that separating people from their families through endless punishment is somehow a path to<br>safety: an estimated 8 million Americans have been to prison, over 70 million (20% of the population) are living with a criminal record, and nearly half of American families are impacted by American prisons and jails. Contrary to the claims of certain politicians, these policies have actually made us less safe.</p><p>The truth is, we know what keeps us safe. Research demonstrates that 3 key factors are particularly important for lowering crime and increasing safety: <br>1) steady income, whether<br>through employment or public benefits; <br>2) access to safe, stable housing; and <br>3) access to care and services. These are the factors that promote well-being, success, and empowerment<br>for individuals, families, and communities—all while reducing crime. 1 Aby vs 100 Gorillas<p>JUSTICE REINVESTMENT</p><p>KEY TO REDUCING INDIGENOUS INCARCERATION - Tom Calma</p><p>Crime rates are dropping, but rates of imprisonment – particularly of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people – are sky-rocketing. A new approach is needed.</p><p>The Australian Law Reform Commission’s Pathways to Justice report tabled in April is the most recent in a long line to address the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in prison, and not the first to point to justice reinvestment as a solution.</p><p>The ongoing and increasing expenditure of public resources on imprisonment for low-level offenders is a bad investment in social, health and economic terms. Returning low-level offenders from prison to socially and economically disadvantaged communities where there is inadequate housing, low levels of participation in schooling, few training or employment opportunities and limited or no drug and alcohol rehabilitation services doesn’t make sense. We are setting people – and communities – up to fail.</p><p>What does make sense is reprioritising where our money is spent.
