Shtolts: A Night of Queer Yiddish Poetry

Happy Pride from the Workers Circle!

The Yiddish literary canon contains many rich engagements with gender and sexuality. Despite eras of social and political repression, queerness abounds in a number of beautiful and challenging texts.

Come celebrate Pride Month (der shtolts-khoydesh) with Workers Circle staff Yasha Giner (Yiddish Cultural Activism Fellow) and Francesca Rubinson (Senior Social Justice Organizer). Unpack provocative examples of kvirkayt  — queerness — in Yiddish literature and culture with us, and learn some Pride Month Yiddish vocabulary along the way. All are welcome!

This event is free, but donations are welcome to strengthen our activism and Yiddish work.

"Eric Mandell (1902-1988) was a cantor and collector of rare and popular Jewish sheet music, books and catalogs. The Eric Mandell collection of Jewish music material contains musical works from over five hundred composers of Jewish music from the 19th and 20th centuries."

I don't know how I spent 2.5 months doing musician research at YIVO and I never knew to call up RG 112 "Music collection" which is like a huge mix of old musical scores. Didn't even know it existed...

not necessarily relevant to my research project so not a huge loss in that sense but I definitely would have looked through and photographed some of the old klezmer scores from NY of the 1910s/20s...
