It is not something that... I want to push front and center. I do have a few trans friends, and they matter as themselves.

There is one here who is a dear friend, and they have a couple of stories published - @hiisikoloart . Any at all is better than none.

For poetry, Jay Hulme.
For SF, Charlie Jane Anders.
For microfiction and incisive analysis, Alexandra Erin.

I don't pay that much attention to the author unless it's someone I met here.

And plus, I don't care much whether a person is trans or whatever as long as I like their story.

I might think differently if I was friends w/ a trans person irl and more familiar w/ their struggles (like with LBG). Maybe? 🤷‍♀️

NaraMoore ⛩️👻八尺様👻⛩️ at Fedi
I am not sure I am interrupting your post correctly. But one highlights trans authors for the same reason you highlight any other group that has been discriminated against, systematically silenced, and locked out of the publishing industry. The same reason you support POC authors, women authors, ASD authors, etc.

It is not necessarily because they write about being that minority; it is because they are routinely silenced. Whatever they write in someway reflects their life experience as a marginalized individual.

I fit none of the criteria you mention, yet my characters reflect the realities of being trans, lesbian, and/or asexual. Undoubtedly, it also reflects life as ASD without my being aware of it.

@elysegrasso
#Trans #actuallyautistic #Asexual #TransgenderDayofVisibility #WritersCoffeeClub

What trans author has inspired you the most?

Unless a work is openly autobiographical or political or topical -- strongly focused on some aspects of the trans experience, particularly transition as such -- making a fuss about the author being trans feels wrong. Not quite dead-naming them, but leaning in that direction.

Having said that, most of my work centers trans/nonbinary agender characters, because that's who I am, and those lived experiences invariably color my work and deserve to be seen and featured.

I do have a few characters that would fly the LGBTIA+ flag.

Solen Masters doesn't go too deep in to their relationships and more on the action on the battlefield, so no flag.

Project Watt is clearly not ready for release, but probably will get the flag, given the major characters. Why or why not?

No. Characters are characters. Sexual preferences should not be used as a tag, a genre, or a marketing gimmick. They go to the supermarket, use the toilet, and laugh at the same jokes as other people. If a character happens to fall somewhere on that spectrum, there's no outlandish reveal and support party to convey how supportive I am of them and their existence.

Quasi
#WritersCoffeeClub 30: Label works as LGBTQIA+?

I do if it's relevant? "Time & Tied" wouldn't qualify, Carrie only kissed a girl and entered a relationship late in the narrative. The sequel would qualify, there's a whole lesbian love triangle.

Related, any Epsilon story with Beam wouldn't qualify if she's busy running the station. Any story with Rose would qualify, because her understanding being lesbian is wrapped up in her narrative.

FWIW, I'm not queer myself, only on the spectrum.

Bern
Writers’ Coffee Club for 31st March 2025

31. Happy International Transgender Day of Visibility! What trans author has inspired you the most?

I’m sorry to say I cannot name any trans authors off the top of my head. I may have read works by some, but if so I’m unaware of their status. To a large extent I don’t pay all that much attention to such things, instead I just look for good writers, irrespective of gender.

In many ways, I prefer it that way, because then I don't come to their writing with any preconceptions or biases (of which I have far too many!), but instead assess it for its own merit.

#WritersCoffeeClub

One of my friends said my writing isn't really queer fiction because, although I have queer protagonists and situations, the works aren't really *about* that. *Revin's Heart* is just a young-mans adventure story about a person who happens to be trans. But they haven't read *Lady Cecelia's Journey*. That might be closer.
