www.dlr.deDeutsche Raumfahrtagentur im DLR und Bundeswehr nutzen Daten fortan gemeinsamNie zuvor in der Geschichte der Raumfahrt gab es mehr aktiv genutzte Satelliten und mehr Weltraumschrott als heute. Gleichzeitig wird die eigene Infrastruktur im Orbit aber nicht nur durch Weltraumschrott gefährdet, sondern unterliegt auch potenziellen Bedrohungen durch andere Akteure in der Raumfahrt. Daher betreiben die Deutsche Raumfahrtagentur DLR und das Weltraumkommando der Bundeswehr seit 2011 das Weltraumlagezentrum in Uedem. Damit die Arbeit reibungslos durchgeführt werden kann, haben beide Parteien am 22. Juli 2025 eine Mitnutzungsvereinbarung geschlossen, auf dessen Grundlage der gegenseitige, nahezu vollständige Datenaustausch geregelt ist.

arXiv.orgA nanosecond-duration radio pulse originating from the defunct Relay 2 satelliteWe report the detection of a burst of emission over a 695.5 MHz-1031.5 MHz bandwidth by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder, ASKAP. The burst was localised through analysis of near-field time delays to the long-decommissioned Relay 2 satellite, and exhibited a dispersion measure of $2.26 \cdot 10^{-5}$ pc cm$^{-3}$ -- 69.7 TECU, consistent with expectations for a single pass through the ionosphere. After coherent dedispersion, the burst was determined to be less than 30 ns in width, with an average flux density of at least 300 kJy. We consider an electrostatic discharge (ESD) or plasma discharge following a micrometeoroid impact to be plausible explanations for the burst. ESDs have previously been observed with the Arecibo radio telescope, but on 1000 times longer timescales. Our observation opens new possibilities for the remote sensing of ESD, which poses a serious threat to spacecraft, and reveals a new source of false events for observations of astrophysical transients.

Lunar Litter (Jettison Bag) or Things we left on the moon

Garbage bag, inspired by the so-called “jettison bags” used in space travel. I had two of these bags produced and embroidered with the lettering “lunar litter only.” On May 23, 2023, one bag was sent to the HQ of NASA with the request that it be taken to the moon as part of the Artemis II mission, planned for 2025, to retrieve some of the 190 tons of material left behind by NASA during the Apollo missions.
