Just going to repeat something.

#Ofwat ALWAYS had teeth.

It could have fined any water company 10% of its turnover at any time. It chose never to do so. So what confidence do we have that this new organisation will be more effective?

Why was #WaterPrivatisation not mentioned in Cunliffe's report today

Thur Southern Water boss doubles salary

Fri announcement of 60% increase in serious pollution incidents

YESTERDAY g'ment put together a raft of stuff which upon examination was nothing more than what the previous Tory g'ment was saying and nothing to do with this industry at all

And then Cunliffe puts out a recommendation to abolish #Ofwat but I don't think he can have that without want wanting to get rid of Environment Agency.

In 1884, when water privatisation was first considered, Joseph Chamberlain, an early Liberal politician, said, "It is difficult, if not impossible to combine the citizens' rights and interests and the private enterprise's interests, because the private enterprise aims at its natural and justified objective, the biggest possible profit"

Nothing has changed in that philosophy since that date.

"Nothing demonstrates better the appalling environmental record of our polluting water companies than the fact that they are not even taking care of the highly protected areas that they actually own. It simply cannot be right that the payment of large dividends to shareholders and huge bonuses to bosses is prioritised before protecting SSSIs. This entire culture of polluting for profit must end”

He then goes on to describe a poorly regulated industry with a regulator who neither had, nor sought, appropriate powers to regulate effectively until it was far too late 🤷‍♂️
Now he wants us to trust they and their industry partners will do better in the future...
