#OTD in 1461 - Wars of the Roses: Battle of Towton: The army of Edward of York defeats Queen Margaret's army to become King Edward IV of England

Queen Margaret raised the Lancastrian army because Henry VI was a prisoner in the Tower of London

Over 50,000 soldiers fought in the Battle of Towton and the casualty rate was high. Estimates vary with over 8,000 killed on the low end to over 20,000 killed on the high side.

30 Dec 1460 Battle of Wakefield. Richard duke of York leaves the safety of Sandal Castle to fight the Lancastrian army. It was a crushing defeat. York & his son Edmund are killed. His brother in law, the earl of Salisbury was executed the next day. The ms shows an obit for Richard duke of York written in, in the margins. (Image:BL Royal 2 B XIV f. 6v)

Our thanks to Annette Carson
and Philippa Langley for excellent talks via Zoom today for Richard III Society members. Annette spoke on why she feels the Bones in the Urn could not be those of the Princes (the bones were buried too deeply), and of course, Philippa talked about the results of the search for those princes in the Tower. There was a lot of audience engagement! A recording of the talk will be made available to members.

The embargo has been lifted and the news is out! Philippa Langley and her team of researchers have found credible evidence that the Princes in The Tower outlived Richard III and each made their own play for the English crown. A documentary by UK's Ch 4 will air on Saturday 18 Nov about this discovery and can be seen in other countries in the next days and weeks. See richardiii.net/faqs/the-prince for more details

Two anonymous 17th Century ballads describing the purported evil deeds of Richard III, the murder of the Princes in the Tower, and the Battle of Bosworth Field, which was fought #onthisday in 1485.
A good example of Tudor propaganda.

A song of the Life and Death of King Richard the Third (to the tune of Who list to lead a soldier's life)
and
The most cruel murther of Edward the fifth, and his brother Duke of York, in the Tower; by their Uncle Richard Duke of Gloucester (to the tune of Fortune my foe)
From Richard Johnson's ballad miscellany, The Golden Garland of Princely Delights, 1620
