Which is why it gets Superman right – National Public Radio – NPR</strong></p><blockquote><p>Review<br><strong>James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ movie is corny. Which is why it gets Superman right</strong><br>July 10, 20254:27 PM ET</p><p>Heard on All Things Considered</p>David Corenswet plays Superman in James Gunn’s new film. Warner Bros. Pictures<p></p><p>Glen Weldon, 4-Minute Listen</p><p>Before I saw James Gunn’s new Superman movie, which sets out to lay the cornerstone of a new era for DC superhero characters, I was pessimistic.</p><p>Over my years as a critic, I’ve loved a few Gunn projects for their humor and cleverness (Slither, Guardians of the Galaxy) but more recently hated others for their adolescent glibness (Peacemaker) and cheap sentimentality (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3), respectively.</p><p>But I’ve spent far more years — decades, in fact — as a Superman fan. A few years back I channelled that fandom into an egregiously nerdy form of scholarship, when I wrote Superman: The Unauthorized Biography, a cultural history of the character that tracks which aspects of him have changed over the years (and why) and which have remained constant (and why).</p><p>Here’s the TL;DR for that book: The two central, definitive attributes to any Superman story are selflessness and resolve. He must always: 1. Put the needs of others before those of himself and 2. Refuse to give up. If either of those factors are missing, our minds rebel — it’s simply not Superman.</p><p>Continue Reading at: <a href="https://www.npr.org/2025/07/10/nx-s1-5453867/superman-review" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">‘Superman’ review: James Gunn’s version gets Superman right : NPR</a></p></blockquote> <p><a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/2025/" target="_blank">#2025</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/film/" target="_blank">#Film</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/films/" target="_blank">#Films</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/james-gunn/" target="_blank">#JamesGunn</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/libraries/" target="_blank">#Libraries</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/library/" target="_blank">#Library</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/movies/" target="_blank">#Movies</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/national-public-radio/" target="_blank">#NationalPublicRadio</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/npr/" target="_blank">#NPR</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/review/" target="_blank">#Review</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/science-fiction/" target="_blank">#ScienceFiction</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/superman/" target="_blank">#Superman</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/television/" target="_blank">#Television</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/united-states/" target="_blank">#UnitedStates</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://drwebdomain.blog/tag/warner-brothers/" target="_blank">#WarnerBrothers</a></p>

John Eckman<p><strong>ZZ Top, ZZ Top’s First Album, 1971 on London / Warner Bros</strong></p><p>Originally issued in the US on London Records (the American imprint of Decca) in 1971, <a href="https://goatless.org/tag/zz-top" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">ZZ Top</a>‘s First Album was reissued by Warner Bros in 1978, likely based on the success of Tres Hombres, Fandango, and Tejas – their 1979 Degüello would be their first new album on Warner Bros. The original LP was not a huge success so it can be harder to find one on the London label. </p><p>Formed after Moving Sidewalks disbanded, ZZ Top’s very stable lineup included from the beginning Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard, here identified as “Rube Beard.” (Dusty Hill died in 2021). </p><p>You can see the age in my copy which seems to have been exposed to the sun (before I owned it!) at the top – that white bar – but maybe that was the sleeve without the vinyl as there’s no warping. </p><p>My copy via A1 Records in NYC</p><p><a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/1970s" target="_blank">#1970s</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/1971" target="_blank">#1971</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/a1-records" target="_blank">#A1Records</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/billy-gibbons" target="_blank">#BillyGibbons</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/dusty-hill" target="_blank">#DustyHill</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/frank-beard" target="_blank">#FrankBeard</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/london-records" target="_blank">#LondonRecords</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/nyc" target="_blank">#NYC</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinyl" target="_blank">#vinyl</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylcollection" target="_blank">#vinylcollection</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/vinylfinds" target="_blank">#vinylfinds</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/warner-brothers" target="_blank">#WarnerBrothers</a> <a rel="nofollow noopener" class="hashtag u-tag u-category" href="https://goatless.org/tag/zz-top" target="_blank">#ZZTop</a></p>

John Eckman<p><strong>Grateful Dead, Anthem of the Sun, 1968 on Warner Bros / Seven Arts</strong></p><p>Second LP from the Dead, assembled together by Garcia and Lesh out of a mixture of live and studio recordings to make a new hybrid. Very much a psychedelic and experimental record, as the cover and song titles would suggest. </p><p>My copy is the <a href="https://www.vinylmeplease.com/products/the-grateful-dead-anthem-of-the-sun" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Vinyl Me, Please reissue</a> from 2023, which was manufactured for Rhino. It includes on the gatefold the letter Joe Smith, the VP at Warner Bros, sent to Danny Rifkin calling the recording of <em>Anthem of the Sun</em> “the most unreasonable project with which we have ever involved ourselves” and noting the Grateful Dead “has many problems” and “never will be truly important.” It’s also a version of the “original” mix rather than the more well known 1972 mix. Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: OK, now for something fun. Carl Stalling did music for countless cartoons, most famous for his work with Warner Brothers, but also Disney and other studios. He did a new score almost weekly for 22 years!</p><p>Stalling was a master of the "musical pun," inserting bits of popular or classical music into his scores to accentuate the humor, but his original work was also vital. In just a few bars he could set tone and atmosphere like few composers can.</p><p>I've long felt that light composers don't get enough credit, and Stalling definitely doesn't! Listen to his work and realize how much of his music has permeated our culture...</p><p>"Untitled Soft Shoe," composed by Carl Stalling, in multiple clips from Warner Brothers cartoons.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKf6sxf43YI" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=PKf6sxf43Y</span><span class="invisible">I</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/CarlStalling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CarlStalling</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/WarnerBrothers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WarnerBrothers</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/LooneyTunes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LooneyTunes</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MerrieMelodies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MerrieMelodies</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/BugsBunny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BugsBunny</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/LightMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LightMusic</span></a></p>
