#WarOfTheRohirrim

Just watched The War of the Rohirrim finally (on my flight), and I'm left with mixed but mostly positive feelings. The story leans heavily on familiar tropes and at times it feels a bit too much like “Éowyn, but animated” with a classic rebellious daughter arc, but it still worked for me. It was gritty enough as well.

The animation, which I don’t usually go for, felt surprisingly fitting. A visual style that respected the world more than it tried to modernise it. Helm Hammerhand’s transformation into a spectral legend? That’s pure Tolkien saga, and it was handled beautifully. Easily the most compelling part of the film. And a bit of a relief after the somewhat corporate Héra storyline.

Compared to The Rings of Power, this felt less like corporate IP exploitation and more like someone actually read the appendices and cared. It’s not flawless, and you can feel the screenplay straining a bit under the weight of trying to build emotional arcs from sparse lore. But it gets the tone right, and that matters a lot.

Would happily take more Middle-earth stories in this style, as long as the writing keeps improving.

Hubs (@GrumpyOldBear) and I watched today for the first time. Enjoyed it very much! Beautifully animated. The story grabbed you and held on. The characters were well-rounded and fit well in 's world. Will be watching it regularly, as we do the movies.

Saw "War of the Rohirrim."

I have questions. (I'm not super familiar with Tolkien's works.)

1) Is this a new story written for the movie, a recounting of an actual Tolkien story, a tale fleshed out from marginalia or historical notes, or what?

2) Seemed like there were some digs at Tolkien for women being under-represented in his stories. Is that the intent? Or am I reading too much into it?

3) Is this the first Tolkien movie that passes the Bechdel test?

My #review of the film

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

For me, the film is between 8 and 9 out of 10 on its own, but for a Lord of the Rings film it lacks that certain something.

I think it's a real shame that it didn't captivate me like Dune, for example. I just don't feel that certain something.

But at least it's not a waste of time.

It's not because of the animation.

Meine Einschätzung zum Film

Der Herr der Ringe: Die Schlacht der Rohirrim
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim

Watched Lord of the Rings War of the Rohirrim . I think it's thematically appropriate, well written, has a good score, and the animation is decent. It's as faithful to the source material as an adaptation of appendix material can be, more than Rings of Power. Apocryphal, but respectfully so. Maybe the animation is a bit stiff at times.

Not sure why the critics hate it.

Report.

Great epic action. Gorgeous animation. Obvs they wreck story, near end. Glaring holes of "oh, they coulda just done X and... oh, they are not? okay, then..." but otherwise great entertainment.

I'll discuss those glaring plot holes later, when more peeps have watched.
