DON Family History Society2. She was brought back to Birmingham and died of pneumonia on 17th December 1918 aged 26. She is buried at Holy Ascension Churchyard, Settle. She was the daughter of James Procter and Mary Ann Close. In 1915 Doris joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment at 5th Northern General Hospital Leicester. DON Family History Society3. Gertrude Farr went to the local post office in 1916 and was told: 'We don't give pensions to the widows of cowards.' She was left destitute, with a three-year-old and a four-month-old to feed. His family suffered from shame and financial hardship following his execution. They said that there son did not have a fair trial and that he suffered from shell shock. In 1992 his family began a campaign to have him pardoned. Harry Thomas Farr did get pardoned along with 305 other men. <a href="https://genealysis.social/tags/WW1" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#WW1</a>

DON Family History Society2. He fought at the Battle of the Somme and at Neuve Chapelle. In 1915-1916 he was hospitalised many times for shell shock. On 17th September 1916 he did not comply with an order to return to the front line. He was arrested and charged for cowardice. At his court martial he was found guilty and was sentenced to death. He was executed on 18th October 1916, Carnoy, France aged 25. DON Family History Society1. Series of men who were executed for desertion in WWI: Harry Thomas Farr was born in 1890, Kensington, London. He was the son of William Farr and Alice Grant. In 1913 he married Gertrude Lydia Young. Harry and Gertrude had one daughter. He volunteered to fight for his country in 1914 - the year the war with Germany began. During the war Harry served with the 1st Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment on the Western Front, Reg.
