I'll focus on keeping it away from the trees.</p><p>"Q - I find the Virginia Creeper to be a very invasive plant. It climbs up my lilacs 20 ft high, basically anything that isn’t evergreen. I went to trim my forsythia and half of what I cut off were Creeper vines. I also battled Norway Maples and the small leafed rose that are defined as invasive but what’s up with this vine?"</p><p>"A - Virginia creeper/woodbine (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) is a highly adaptable, native Maine plant that thrives in a number of environments, and provides multiple animal species with food in the wild. Because of this, it’s often used to reclaim ground to fill in holes in the landscape or to effect an erosion control strategy. Also because of this, it can get out of hand under the right conditions, and it sounds like you may have them."</p><p><a href="https://extension.umaine.edu/gardening/2024/06/12/how-do-you-control-virginia-creeper/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">extension.umaine.edu/gardening</span><span class="invisible">/2024/06/12/how-do-you-control-virginia-creeper/</span></a></p><p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.online/@ZoeOeoZ" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>ZoeOeoZ</span></a></span> </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Gardening</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GardeningForPollinators" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GardeningForPollinators</span></a></p>

Because it’s part of the local Flora, it’s not really a danger to local trees.</p><p>I’ve never dealt with Autumn Olive, but removing the fruit while you research it further seems like a good approach. These guys are the local experts: <a href="https://blueridgeprism.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/Autumn-Olive-Fact-Sheet-Blue-Ridge-PRISM.pdf" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">blueridgeprism.org/wp-content/</span><span class="invisible">uploads/2023/05/Autumn-Olive-Fact-Sheet-Blue-Ridge-PRISM.pdf</span></a></p>
DoomsdaysCW<p>So, I took a jaunt around the yard in between rain showers, and used <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/FloraIncognita" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FloraIncognita</span></a> to identify 30 plants (it was wrong about one of them, but the accuracy of the reading was at 29%). It identified two species -- one that could potentially strangle living trees (<a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/VirginiaCreeper" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VirginiaCreeper</span></a>), and the other one is invasive but provides food for pollinators (Autumn Olive). I think we'll focus on gathering the Autumn Olive berries until we figure out how to deal with it without herbicides (apparently cutting it back, makes it grow even more). Hmmmm...
