The EU will keep €18 billion frozen for Hungary over rule of law concerns.

Hungary is nowhere near unblocking the €18 billion in cohesion and recovery funds that Brussels keeps frozen due to persisting concerns about democratic backsliding, according to the European Commission's latest Rule of Law Report.

The frozen amount combines around €8.4 billion in cohesion funds and €9.5 billion in COVID-19 recovery funds.

More than 100,000 people showed up for the annual Budapest Pride march, in spite of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán banning it — he later claimed that "puppet politicians" in Brussels had orchestrated the event. Opposition politicians and experts see it as an indicator that people are fed up with Orbán's style of government. "The tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of people who took part in this demonstration experienced that there is an impact, there is a reason to stand up for things or to stand against things, you can show strength, and if the government says or does something, it doesn't necessarily make it happen," says Bulcsú Hunyadi, an analyst at Political Capital, a Hungarian policy research and consulting institute. " Organizers of the event put the number of participants at between 180,000 and 200,000, making it the biggest Pride march the Hungarian capital has seen in the 30 years of the event. "

" “Viktor Orbán became the King of Pride yesterday because nobody else could have managed to mobilize such a large crowd for a demonstration against himself by inciting hatred,” he wrote, adding that Orbán had shown “exceptional talent” at organizing the event. "

Hundreds of thousands gather to mark the 30th anniversary of Budapest Pride despite Orbán's ban.

Following the ban, Budapest Pride has taken on new meaning, becoming a powerful symbol of resistance against the government's ongoing restrictions on freedom of assembly and human rights.

Among the crowd were members of the European Parliament, international supporters, and many so-called "first priders".
