I know that some of you are lousy with rabbits, but here in the Bronx, a little bunny browsing for tender greens is a sweet surprise. #VanCortlandtPark
This night heron always has big Keanu Reeves energy--too famous to hang around alone outside without drawing paparazzi, but too accustomed to it to care.

I'm pretty sure this young mom is a blue-winged teal with her seven very orderly adolescents. #VanCortlandtPark
We didn't bring binoculars, so we're not 100% sure who was on the pond with 10 tiny babies, but we think it was the wood duck. And then we got sort of dive bombed by a red-tailed hawk and then saw her mate (probably?) nearby, looking as big as a house on top of the baseball backstop. Very exciting muggy morning walk in #VanCortlandtPark .
#InwoodPark Ablaze as #BrushFires Reach Historic Levels Across #NYC
Firefighters have responded to more than 200 brush fires in the past two weeks, including nearly two dozen in #VanCortlandtPark in The Bronx, as the city reckons with an historically dry and fiery season.

‘We Could Smell It From Our Apartment’
"The recent brush fires over a historically dry stretch included two separate ones over four days in wooded parts of the Bronx’s sprawling Van Cortlandt Park that have local residents and officials concerned about what could be coming before significant rain finally arrives.
"'Remarkably dry conditions in October and so far in November have resulted in a historic amount of brush fires over the last two weeks,' FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker said in a statement on Wednesday, hours before another brush fire erupted in Inwood Hill Park. 'Due to a significant lack of rainfall, the threat of fast spreading brush fires fueled by dry vegetation and windy conditions pose a real threat to our members and our city."

Today in #VanCortlandtPark in #TheBronx #nyc , I came across a floral display at the old mansion house — folks put up artificial flowers and tags4 respect and memory and forgiveness for the #nyc history borne out of the labors of enslaved folks labors. It is indeed an enlightening restorative justice project.
Big animal day in #VanCortlandtPark ! A big bearded great blue heron, ten zillion turtles, a cormorant, and our old bullfrog pal, easily over a pound, with a lady friend hiding under a rock nearby.
#HappyEaster to those who celebrate from an #EasternGreySquirrel in #TheBronx #VanCortlandtPark #nyc
(This little squirrel in the video stole the kids’ blue egg hidden in the park under an eastern white pine before a kid could find it, cracked it open, barked at me when I approached, ate the contents, and ran off before I had a chance to stop him.)

Here is my day 4 of inktober- dodge. A scene very similar to this totally happened to me today as I was unicycling through Van Courtland Park. Was I dodging the pigeon, or was the pigeon dodging me? I'll leave that to the philosophers.

Are new #invasives like #SpottedLanternFly worse in #nyc this year?
Yesterday in #VanCortlandtPark they were all over the place. Today in #InwoodHillPark there were even more. Like 1000’s.
I paused under the Henry Hudson Parkway to swat a few 100. Felt pointless. Some helpful guy said to me “you’re the third person I seen stopped to swat those things”. Geez.

@haq Thanks. By filtering to all of 2019 I got this hopefully not paywalled article about the #sheep #grazing in #London recently. This would work in many #NYC parks.#RiversidePark, #VanCortlandtPark. I think #CentralPark is too busy and I'm unfamiliar with #ProspectPark. It would be good to cut back on the use of fossil fuel and noise. People will complain about the poop, but then it they already have to mindful of goose poop and dog poop.
