So, I read all of the classic 80s sports manga, Captain Tsubasa recently.

Some thoughts.

The notes on the Viz translation explaining West and East Germany for modern readers who don't know about it was a trip.

I'm still shocked over the idea of a 15 year old just leaving home to move to a new country without their parents to try to become a professional athlete and skipping high school. But, I guess that was the 80s.

It was such a fast paced manga, such an easy read.

Also, I've watched and played soccer - there's way more downtime in this manga where people have whole conversations than in real life.

It was a lot of fun, very melodramatic.

Glad I read it.

Second - Lots of secret talks happened that the reader doesn't know between Kenshiro and Raoh. It's not a bad thing, per say, but it's a lot and a lot to reveal all at once. It still leads to some poignant moments, but it's also gives way to "Huh" a few times.

Finally - once more, having feelings, allowing yourself to love, conquers all. I love that in a series about beefy men beating each other up in a post-apocalyptic setting, this is OFTEN the central moral.

New Read - Fist of the North Star, Volume 16 (Viz Hardcover Edition)

Another fantastic, violent volume of Fist of the North Star. Kenshiro has his final battle with Kaioh and so many secrets about the past are revealed. Also, Bat returns to carry Rin off into the sunset.

Big moments: First- Kenshiro recognized that he should not be with Rin. Rin always "loved him" in that she looked up to him, not romantically. Bat loved her so fiercely, always. And she loved him too. Letting them go together makes sense.
