The current pool and fountain were constructed in the 1980s. Though #ClintonSquare (and all of downtown #Syracuse) bears deep scars from the #UrbanRenewal movement’s hollowing out of old downtowns and neighboring, historically black neighborhoods in the 1960s and 70s, the plaza today does a remarkable job of evoking the canal's presence, especially in person.

A year ago, I ran into a young man I knew from a volunteering project, at a terrace in downtown . His mother had encouraged him and his brother to join our Sunday activities. I mistakenly called him by his brother’s name. He gently corrected me—his brother had been shot dead a year earlier, at the corner near the local laundromat. He told me he was working interim at the now-closed car factory.
