In the 1960s, 70s and 80s, this was a common sight as tens of thousands of tenements were demolished across the city, and in many cases the wall around the fireplaces left hanging on the air was still decorated with wallpaper, creating a colourful, if rather discombobulating, spectacle.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/tenement" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tenement</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgowtenements" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgowtenements</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/urbanregeneration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>urbanregeneration</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/urbanrenewal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>urbanrenewal</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glashowbuildings" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glashowbuildings</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/tollcross" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tollcross</span></a></p>

This Is My Glasgow<p>Unfortunately, we seem to have failed to learn from past mistakes, and once again such buildings are rapidly swamping Glasgow's tradtional architecture, much to the detriment of the city's unique feel. Yes, Glasgow cannot remain the same forever, but new buildings can still pay homage to its architectural traditions, fit in with the existing streetscapes, and and be uniquely Glaswegian, as long as the city's planning department has the willingness to demand it </p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/urbanregeneration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>urbanregeneration</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>Two contrasting corners on Waterloo Street in Glasgow, one on either side of its junction with Blythswood Street. The northeastern corner retains its typically Glaswegian sandstone buildings, while the traditional buildings to the west were cleared in the 1960s as part of the Anderston Comprehensive Development Area. They have now been replaced by rather generic and non-descript modern buildings which could be anywhere in the world. </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/urbanregeneration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>urbanregeneration</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/anderston" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>anderston</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>Thinking of Bella by Shona Kinloch. It was commissioned as part of Page and Park's 1994 Italian Centre, an award-winning mixed development of shops, cafes and flats based around a central courtyard. This was the first major development in the regeneration of the Merchant City area in Central Glasgow. Importantly, it maintained much of the original facades, creating a modern space without disturbing the surroundings traditional streetscapes.</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/statue" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>statue</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/urbanregeneration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>urbanregeneration</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>Reconstructing a great lost building would not only raise the city's profile, but could be used as a template for regenerating other areas decimated by the well-intended, but poorly thought through planning decisions of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Yes, it might be costly, but if done well, it could be a real catalyst for creating a Glasgow for the future which respects its built heritage while still looking forward and embracing change.</p><p>Thoughts anyone?</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/urbanregeneration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>urbanregeneration</span></a></p>
This Is My Glasgow<p>Here's a though for a saturday morning: since there are plans to demolish the 1980s St Enoch Centre (left of shot), rather than replacing it with a bland, generic highrise structure, why not replace it with a new building which compliments the older traditional architecture of St Enoch Square (right) and turn this area back into the rather stunning civic space it once was? </p><p>Cont./</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/glasgow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>glasgow</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/architecture" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>architecture</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/urbanregeneration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>urbanregeneration</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/stenochcentre" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>stenochcentre</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/stenochsquare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>stenochsquare</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.scot/tags/stenochstation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>stenochstation</span></a></p>
