Pieces of 8-bit's HQ Remakes | InvidiousUltima IV (HQ Remake) - Intro and Towne (2024)If you would like to commission a piece of your own, be it original or remake, please contact me via the About section of my channel (mobile users may have to use Desktop mode). All proceeds go back into the channel for the benefit of all gamerkind. Released just in time for the Christmas season of 1985 after 2 years of development, Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar sees the end of the combat-centric "Age of Darkness" as the series moves to embrace a more virtuous and story-driven gameplay style in the first installment of the "Age of Enlightenment" trilogy. Now in a time of peace, the newly minted land of Britannia (and despite 3/4 of the world disappearing the game takes place on a much larger map than ever before) allows the player to hone their zeal in the Eight Virtues instead of facing some terrible evil. They battle their inner demons to master the virtues, collect artifacts, and plumb the depths of the Stygian Abyss to find the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom in order to become the Avatar. When you visit the gypsy fortune teller, her cards will lead you to a dominant virtue that will decide which class of (human only) character you will play. The player must collect the runes for each of the Shrines and gain enlightenment in each of the Eight Virtues. Mistakes can be made upon the path, causing you to lose your way and forcing you to redeem yourself. How you play will determine when you are ready for another Shrine. This is the first time we get to see the world map in full. 16 times larger than Ultima III, this map will lay the foundation for the game world for future titles. This is the first game in the series to have NPC conversations based on keywords you type in, giving far greater depth to interactions than previous titles. Perturbed by the witch hunt against RPGs at the time by fearful parents who didn't understand, Richard Garriott, aka Lord British himself, decided to make this game less about fighting and more about morality. There is no Big Bad, there are deep moral dilemmas (some are 10/10 gritty) where you may think you came out on top only to realize later that you did not. The idea was definitely to get you to think before you act. The game was coded for Apple, and then ported to C64, Atari 8-bit Family, PC, Amiga, Sega Master System and NES. This remake is from the C64 version of the music, and in fact a few of those machines in the list above had no music at all, which was a shame. Highly rated, the game went on to win Game of the Year in 1986, toppling competitor Wizardry's reign as the best RPG. It topped charts for many years as one of the best RPGs of all time and later was inducted in the Computer Gaming World Hall of Fame. Even today, the game holds up fairy well considering how far things have come since this game was released. I highly recommend it for a nice change of pace from the formulaic "fighting is the only way to improve" character development. Ultima IV is TRUE character development. Things I did from age 6–19 because of the #Ultima series:

1. I lived by the 8 Virtues
2. I founded “The Fellowship” in our school (w/o our school's knowledge)
3. Tried the Mandrake virtues (j/k on this)

If you think that was it… in 2003 I founded the #HolyOrderOfTheLight a multi-game, multi-region gaming guild.

Guess which #Ultima virtues guided me?

“The Axiom of Singularity”

I even wrote this: im.youronly.one/yuki/ultima-6-

“HOL” is still kicking. ^^

That's how influential the Ultima series is for me. It shaped me. It taught me. It's a part of me. #Avatar #Avatarhood

In 2021 the musician Pieces of 8-Bit released a remake of the Ultima IV soundtrack on YouTube. Last year the #xu4 project was contacted to help create a music module for the game. This soundtrack has been updated in 2024 and is now finally available for xu4.

Be sure to check out all his other excellent remakes, which include the entire #Ultima series!

Version 1.3 of #xu4 has been released!

This wraps up work on the spoken dialogue that began just over a year ago.

The U4-Recreated module
contains the voice streams and includes most of the U4 Upgrade graphics. The only new artwork is the abacus image by Joshua Steele. I was playing with the font to make it similar to the C64 version, but that has been put aside for now.

(EN) After I had to split my post about Ultima IV into four parts, I created an account on Friendica to post and share a long version. If I feel like it, I'll get nostalgic with other games. Just have to find the best way to share on Mastodon and if I stay there. I'm still experimenting 😀 Tips are welcome, form and style are still coming.

@benjedwards Mine is #Ultima6, #Ultima5, #Ultima4, #Ultima7 (both parts), and #Ultima1.

#UltimaVI because I like stories involving other races and worlds. And in Ultima, a new set of principles and virtues as well.

#UltimaV because of Lord Blackthorn. He was misunderstood. He meant well, just happened to associate with the wrong powers. LOL, I always wore Blackthorn's amulet insstead of the Resistance. (Because Resistance is Futile!)

#UltimaIV. I love a good challenge. How to achieve all 8 virtues. This is the kind of #RPG that is lacking in popular “RPG” games today, offline or MMO.

#UltimaVII. Because of the The Fellowship. I actually like their ideals, it makes sense. Like Lord British (at least in the game), it's supplemental to the Axiom of Infinity, not a replacement. Then Part 2, adventure in yet another world with its own set of virtues!

#UltimaI. The one and only chance to visit all four continents on the planet #Sosaria freely. Even Shamino had his own kingdom. If Sosaria was not torn asunder, there would have been more amazing stories to tell. Maybe they have their own #Avatar or something. Or, they developed technology from those advance ships that crash landed on Sosaria.
