Another great article by @GraphicMatt

Although not the focus of the article, do not forget the impact of, dare I say it, active hostility towards viable alternatives to driving in Canada's densest city.

The promotion of sprawl and car dependency at all levels of government induces a demand that makes car traffic inevitable.

Toronto Star · Toronto city hall finally found a way to help ease traffic congestion — and bring in more money. Not everyone is happyBy Matt Elliott

The City of Toronto is holding a ✌🏾"public"✌🏾 consultation on establishing protest bubbles, zones around buildings and services considered "vulnerable".

I have mentioned in the past, that the city was fine when those buildings were ACTUALLY being targeted by protesters, as long as they were white. But now, people are marching past the same buildings, LITERALLY the same buildings, and suddenly: it's a problem.

Other "vulnerable" buildings, religious institutions, are not simply used for religious gatherings and ceremony. They function as community hubs, where food is served and plans are made to address inequities in the system.

Black churches were where civil rights campaigns were planned.
And they were bombed by white people.

But that's not what is happening now, in 2025. Religious buildings are being used to hold events that are criminal, according to international law.

Protests outside of those buildings are not protesting religious ceremonies. There is no parallel to be drawn with Black churches being targeted by white malevolence.

And let's imagine that a parallel were justifiably to be drawn:

There are no laws on the books designed to protect Black, Indigenous, or brown bodies. There are only laws designed to protect capital and those who control it.

We are the ones who will be targeted by this new by-law.

And if you doubt that, just note the deeply racist way in which this consultation has been implemented.

I invite you not to participate in the farcical display that is this ✌🏾"public consultation"✌🏾 but rather to email engagement@toronto.ca and let them know that you have seen their trickery for what it is, and to call Councillor James Pasternak, who has championed this bit of theatre, at: 416-392-1371 or email him at councillor_pasternak@toronto.ca

Toronto Star’s @benspurr.bsky.social : The NY Times has published an investigation into the Therme development at Ontario Place. It found that while the company told the province it had a proven track record of operating six spas around the world, at the time it had only ever operated one.

After I asked about this, one of the attendees told me that he runs a local foodbank.

"I hate it. I feed 600 families a week, and we can barely keep up. Food banks shouldn't even exist."

No one should be starving in this city. We are the economic centre of Canada. The City of Toronto has allocated ~$750k for the hunger crisis in the 2025 budget. More than 350k people rely on food banks to survive, and that number has probably gone way up since the last time I checked.

From another Toronto based blogger (who focuses more on bikes), I seriously recommend checking out @rmtransit.bsky.social's "Next Toronto" Substack if you haven't already done so! Offers some great perspectives on Toronto beyond transit and how to make this city better. #TOpoli
