JK (he/him)<p>I genuinely liked the way the plot of the new take of <a href="https://tenforward.social/tags/TheWeddingBanquet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TheWeddingBanquet</span></a> had been contemporised, but its direction didn't really work for me (which really threw me, as I adored the director's previous, Fire Island). The first half fell completely flat and I struggled to re-engage as it started to come together. I really do wish we had better representation so that individual bits of queer cinema didn't have so much pressure out on them, but here we are.</p>

Kaito<p>I tried to get Danny to watch this with me, but he refused. It's much more drama than romantic comedy, so maybe he wouldn't like it after all. I feel like a real "Comedy" disarms you with laughter so that when story gets serious, the audience is more emotionally available. This is…the opposite.</p><p>But for me? So amazing to watch them. I know I've seen the original 1993 Ang Lee version, and while I don't remember much about it, I do know that I liked it.</p><p>This version was so much fun, and yet still had a lot of poignancy and a lot to say. sgt1372<p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Movies" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Movies</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Films" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Films</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/AAPI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AAPI</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/AsianAmerican" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AsianAmerican</span></a></p><p>I just watched the newly released <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/TheWeddingBanquet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TheWeddingBanquet</span></a> (2025) at my local <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/AMC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AMC</span></a>. </p><p>This <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/movie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>movie</span></a> is NOT a sequel NOR a remake of the original <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> of the same name -- <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/TheWeddingBanquet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TheWeddingBanquet</span></a> (1993) which was produced &amp; directed by <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/AngLee" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AngLee</span></a>.</p><p>It is an entirely different movie based on an entirely different plot which is only very loosely based on the original.</p><p>Without giving away too much, I'd characterize the new movie as a <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/gay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gay</span></a> <br><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/Asian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Asian</span></a> version of <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/ModernFamily" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ModernFamily</span></a> (which only had 1 gay white couple among many other characters in it) which demonstrates all the same conflicts &amp; insecurities &amp; problems that all couples go thru, whether they are gay, straight or whatever. </p><p>Life is complicated &amp; it is no less complicated (&amp; perhaps even more complicated) for gay folks.</p><p>I liked it and would give it a 7 out of 10 which is same that I'd give for the original. I already have a copy of the original on <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/DVD" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DVD</span></a> in my collection &amp; will buy a DVD of the new movie if &amp; when it's ever released.</p>
