#TheHoldSteady

Twenty years ago today I shot this clip of #TheHoldSteady, just as their second album, Separation Sunday, was starting to gain traction. This was an acoustic in-store set at SoundFix in #Brooklyn, which just happened to be when I was in town for a conference. It was my first time seeing them – not much later they were my favorite band, and I saw them another nine times over the next decade. This was a very talky set, mixing album cuts with old b-sides, but even without the big stacks or a big crowd the depth of Craig Finn's connection with the band's audience still stood out. I didn't take any pics during the set, so unfortunately all I have are low-light video stills.

Talked to Craig Finn about "Always Been," his most novelistic album to date, and how the War on Drugs' Adam Granduciel came to produce it.

Also, Cassandra Jenkins told me that if it hadn't been for Finn's generosity and encouragement around the time she was making "An Overview on Phenomenal Nature," she probably would have quit songwriting. So, credit Finn with a moral-support assist on one of the best albums of the 2020s.

Today’s listening is ‘Thrashing Through The Passion’, the 2019 album by The Hold Steady.

Another rollicking fast-paced rock album from The Hold Steady, with the usual onslaught of bizarre lyrical tales of a world which you feel quite glad not to be a part of!

How the lead singer Craig Finn manages to remember all the song lyrics for their live shows is beyond me!

“Wherever he goes he always orders the usual,
He likes to see what they’ll bring him”
