way back, when being young was still a problem there were these tv and radio shows in west germany, made by the wdr: rockpalast. nights with bands relatively unknown in germany but often with great repute internationally. great music most of it. my friends and me always gathered at one of our places then and watched tv all night. since this was also a radio show we also always recorded the music. we connected as many tape recorders to a radio as possible (i. e. two) and tried to get the best record of the broadcast. since it always were only two tape decks and we were 3 to 5 eager listeners we had to fight for who was to get the "original" recording and who had to cope with a later second rate copy. with zz top and roger chapman & the short list e.g. i had to give in to this second rate records. with king sunny adé nobody competed me. we had never heard african music before so we didn't expect much. but afterwards i had to fight for this cassette.

this concert was my first encounter with african music and it stayed until now! the cassette though was eaten by a vicious cassette player in my car some ten years later. so praise for the internet!

Passing Time

A Photo Series by Sage Sohier

"During the isolation of the pandemic, I had the opportunity to revisit my archive of negatives and contact sheets from the 1980s, and discovered a number of interesting images that I had never printed. These photographs were made between 1979-1985 in a pre-digital, largely un-air-conditioned era, when people fled the heat of their houses to hang out in their yards and on the street. I notice a kind of relaxed sensuality in many of the pictures. Time moved more slowly; restlessness led to spontaneous play."

I'm convinced one day at resale I'm going to stumble on the ultimate '80s BFR/Ghetto Blaster. And when I do, I want to be able to package it with a big lot of '80s tapes. Slowly trying to collect them as I find them. Not even sure what the ultimate '80s BFR would look like but I know it when I'll see it, I suppose.
