Gorgeous Killer
It’s also funny how a common thread amongst bigots that don’t like #TheBadSpace is that I’m rich and being financed by some organization that I don’t work with.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have some funding from dedicated people, but I’m still figuring out how to pay my rent month to month just like everyone else lol!

These people have really created a version of me that only exists in their minds, which is the only place I can live rent free apparently.

Gorgeous Killer
Of course, this is not to say #TheBadSpace is perfect. I can go down a list of things that need to be improved and fixed.

But I would say no fedi dev has been as transparent and open about the project as I have. I believe good moderation cannot happen in a vacuum or be based on one’s person’s perspective. That’s why TBS has been an open book from the start. That’s why it’s always been a collaborative effort.

Pay attention to how people who have so much to say never reference the about page of the project, which gives details on how it all works. Notice how they never quote any of the many times I talk about the projects specifics and choose to reference people who are listed from instances known to house bad actors. Last but not least, see how most ‘criticism’ quotes my response to harassers, but always seems to ignore or leave out the action that instigated that response.

It is very clear to see a lot of negative comments have a pattern of bias that straight up ignores or denies the abuse that happens in the fedi to justify the lies and half truths they want to spread about the project.

Many people don’t like it because it’s a threat to their ability to harass and abuse people without consequence. And in the fedi, that’s a greater sin than the actual abuse and harassment itself.

But it does not change the fact the fedi has a racism problem the project seeks to address directly.

Anyone that denies this context just shouldn’t be paid attention to.

Gorgeous Killer
The underlying assumption of 99% of the bile people have to say about #TheBadSpace is that queer people, especially white queers, cannot be anti-Black bigots that engage in the same behaviors as white nationalists and racists.

You can ask any Black or Brown person on the fedi (well, that hasn’t been tokenized) and know this is simply false. It’s just not true.

I will not have a conversation that denies this obvious reality. That’s a nonstarter for me.

Yes, I’m open to talking about governance models and how trust and accountability can improve, but I will not do so from the standpoint of denialism.

The fedi has been particularly ugly to Black and Brown folks, so there is a massive need for tooling that protects those communities and can be improved as we learn more about what they need to keep them safe.

If we can agree on that, cool, you can fuss at me all day about what you don’t like and what needs to improve about the project.

But if we can’t agree on that basic reality, I just don’t care what you have to say.

Gorgeous Killer
It may surprise some people, but I actually do make it a habit to read about criticisms of #TheBadSpace.

I dismiss most of them because 1. most of them are made in bad faith and are a result of me checking some bigot and 2. they tend to ignore the harassment that was the reason for the project getting created.

I know TBS is a point of discussion in many communities because people worry about its intentions, which is fine. Not only that, but I think that’s a fair point to consider.

But it is impossible to have an honest discussion about the project when one simply ignores the corrosive harassment that happens all the time and even in some cases, tries to gaslight targeted communities by saying they are lying.

As the person that built it, I’m the target of a lot of people who don’t want their to be a consequence for their behavior, so they try to frame as a number of anti-Black tropes, which, ironically invalidates what they say anyway.

And I’ll admit I’m a hard bastard when it comes to safety and moderation. When you’ve seen and experienced what I have, your tolerance for nonsense is nonexistent.

But I will say very few people who have walls of text to say have ever taken the challenge to engage me in good faith about the project and why it exists. I can count on one hand the number of people that have done this and have fingers left.

In my estimation, most criticism of TBS lives by denying the reality of people it is built to protect. It has to downplay the reality of what is happening to justify one’s hate of the project.

I’m open to talking to anyone about why I built and continue to work on TBS. But what I’m not going to do is entertain bigots who want to downplay the level of targeted harassment that happens on the fedi.

That’s the part that pisses them off the most.

The Fedilore Otter 🦦
On three separate occasions, Ro has fantasized about murdering queer people of colour with baseball bats.

In the United States and Canada, "a baseball bat to the face" is synonymous with anti-queer violence. The concepts are so impossible to separate here, that homophobic murders are literally referred to as "gay bashing".

When you defend #TheBadSpace, you are defending some of the most mask-off queerphobia imaginable.

https://mastodon.social/@fedilore/112961802029805219

#Fediblockmeta

The Fedilore Otter 🦦
This is just so wildly bad faith.

#TheBadSpace is not a neutral tool. It is repeatedly used to target, harass, and stalk queer people for being queer.

Ro himself has repeatedly, openly fantasized about doing gay-bashing - generally towards queer people of colour.

If people genuinely wanted to use blocklists to fight bigotry, they wouldn't be rallying behind the one ran by one of the most blatantly transphobic people on fedi.

https://h-i.social/@are0h/114077316224626293

#Fediblockmeta

Gorgeous Killer
There’s an expectation in the fedi that anti-racist and safety efforts are supposed to be kind, understanding and unendingly patient even in the face of relentless harassment and abuse.

#TheBadSpace is the most hated project on the fedi in many circles because it gives teeth to the work of effective moderation against hate specifically. It lessens the context of patience that bigots thrive in to spread their abuse by targeting communities with racist behavior designed to antagonize over time to wear people down.

It puts the onus on instances that engage in poor behavior to improve rather than constantly asking vulnerable groups to contort into some unsustainable shape to be treated as human beings.

Ha, and we all know few things send bigots over the edge quicker than applying the context of personal responsibility to them.

Gorgeous Killer
#TheBadSpace is a specific point of contention because it’s one of the first systems that gives memory to the fedi, so people can identify who engages in this behavior, whether they be right or left leaning.

TBS is agnostic. It doesn’t care how you identify. It cares about patterns of behavior towards vulnerable communities.

And what it reveals is that many spaces that claim care about safety and equality actually don’t, and only make these claims for the sake of perception or communal harmony or collaboration.

It is attacked relentlessly because it reveals the ugly truth that many places are much more aligned with white supremacy than they will admit.

And as difficult as this is, the fedi will always be viewed as a niche alternative until we develop effective tools to identifying these spaces and give the means to permanently disconnect from them.

Kevin Karhan :verified:
@shlee I do hope @iftas took the correct lessions from the whole #TheBadSpace shitshow and excels in #transparebcy and #accountability...

Gorgeous Killer
People seem to forget because #TheBadSpace doesn’t center whiteness, but the ultimate goal isn’t to have a centralized place that manages blocklists for the entire fedi.

The goal is to make an application that anyone can install and use to curate their own experience based on their own community needs.

Ha, it just got popular because it’s good at identifying bigots, but ultimately I want people to install their own instance of TBS.

I’m not really interested in getting people to adhere to my version of the web.

I want to make tools so everyone can have the space that they want.

Gorgeous Killer
If we’re being honest, the current US administration’s methodology of erasing any diversity, equality, and inclusion efforts is very similar to how the fedi operates when it comes to targeting and eliminating Black and Brown voices in this space.

Take the history of #TheBadSpace for example. In many circles, it is hated and defamed not because of what it does, but rather it is an effort that centers the needs of people that aren’t white.

There are still people who sit on my timeline and track everything I do. Strange Objects recently shut down because they became the target of a smear campaign. I talk to several people on Bluesky who’ve said the fedi is simply too hateful for Black folks to exist in peace.

Nah, I’m not phased by Trump and his cronies using their platforms to target Black and Brown folks. I’ve been experiencing that for years in the fedi. That’s just another day for me and a lot of folks who look like me.

Gorgeous Killer
I’m bringing my newsletter back.

I think I stopped because I had to deal the racist backlash against #TheBadSpace in the summer/fall of 2023 and just never got back to it.

But I remember enjoying putting it together as a place where I can just talk to people about random stuff.

Gorgeous Killer
I don’t let people talk to me recklessly. I block people who display an inability to consistently respect my baseline humanity. It’s not hard to have a conversation without being excessively rude for no reason at all.

I built #TheBadSpace to be a community tool so we can collectively start identifying places that allow this kind of entitled and needlessly antagonistic behavior, because no one deserves to be treated with disrespect simply for existing.

I am a very strong believer in decorum and mutual respect. And in my travels all over the blue marble, most people I run into do as well. That’s the norm.

Which is why I am so harsh with bigots.

They are not going redefine how we engage because they hate themselves and can’t get out of their own way and want to spread their self loathing like a various.

Nah, homie.
