A stonefly, sitting on a stone. How apropos. I think there are fly patterns (for fly fishing) for both the adult, winged form and for the nymph.
Photo taken on the bank of the Deschutes River in Central Oregon, where my husband was fly fishing while I sat in the shade, avoiding the masses of poison oak. We were also warned to keep an eye out for rattlesnakes, but didn't see any.
Befriended a #stonefly in the backyard today. We just have a small pond but hopefully this is an auspicious sign of a healthy #ecosystem
Hello Mastadon friends,
It’s been a bit since we last connected.
Still running around the other social media sites. Really, a lot of my friends are there. And I mean that in a genuine way. For instance…
About two weeks ago, a treasured twt’r mutual said he considered me as close as a sister. And it’s true; I’ve always considered him a better part of the family I’d wished for.
Inanycase, here’s a few views from this past week.
Added my stonefly to BugGuide.

Not my first stonefly (Plecoptera), but the first I've befriended.

Winter Stoneflies have finally emerged
I’ve been checking for weeks now. Just a few, but more will make their way from the water.

Image 1 includes:
First #stonefly (#Plecoptera) I've noticed on the sheet
#HawkMoth #Hippotion scrofa
#PlumeMoth #Stenoptilia zophodactylus
Pink-winged #Geometridae #Arhodia lasiocamparia
Tiny striped #GrassMoth #Scoparia spelaea
#Derbidae #Planthopper #Saccharodite chrysonoe
Other #Lepidoptera (Geometridae, #Oecophoridae, #Crambidae #Pyralidae), #Trichoptera, #Neuroptera, #Diptera and #Hemiptera
There are two things a #stonefly takes seriously: its pronotum and its wing venation.
Stonefly lore is full of heroes with large pronota (the collar type thing just behind the head) and their coat-of-arms features wings with the most intricate venation. It's almost comical, really, but don't tell them that - stoneflies are easily offended and angry stoneflies are no fun.
