This is one of the more interesting things I worked on in the 1990s. It was a night sky simulator, with a bunch of edutainmenty content stuck onto it, including 13 animations narrated by astronomer David Levy.

I was initially assigned five of the animations, but ended up taking all 13 because the art director had given them to artists with zero animation experience. The day before the publisher and Mr Levy came to review our progress, I pulled an all-nighter to get all 13 rendered and composited (turning every viable machine in the office into an ad hoc render farm), with my voice as placeholder audio.

David Levy liked my animations. He noted, on my eclipse animation, that the moon was upside-down and the eclipse went the wrong way, but stopped himself and asked the publisher if they were selling the product in Australia.

I have a project plan, I need a big enough project box to fit

- a acrylic dome
- a 180 degree fish eye camera
- a Raspberry Pi
- several RTL-SDRs
- The minimal number of antenna

The idea is to mount it all on the roof as a PoE powered sky cam with a ADS-B, ACARS and AIS decoder. So it can highlight overflying aircraft in the day and spot meteor (and ignore the planes) at night.

Problem now is finding all the parts and the time to build it.

I did sit out in the backyard for about 15 minutes around 1:30 AM this morning to look at the #eclipse.

I had made up a thermos of sweet red tea in honor of the red moon (hibiscus, honey, pomegranate and other delicious things) before I went to bed, so that was warm and waiting for me next to my glasses case on the kitchen table.

I feel very mooned-up now, between the bike trip to the field to watch it rise and then getting up to see it eclipsed. Ahhhhh.

Every time I look at our only considerably-sized orbiting body, I wonder if it feels lonely? I've been reading space fiction again this week. Our space in general feels really lonely to me. 😔

The first total lunar eclipse since 2022 will turn the full moon an eerie shade of red on the night of March 13-14 --- but your chances of seeing it with your own eyes will depend on where you are.

North Americans should have great seats for the eclipse this time around. The key phases of the show,
