Why Did I Build a Dome 3,000km From Home?? (I’m Still Not Sure)

So... I kinda said yes to building an entire observatory dome... on the other side of Australia.

Everyone said we were insane. No crew. No backup. Just a dome, a dream, and way too many snacks.

This video is pure chaos: assembling a giant research-grade observatory from scratch, battling time, tools, and the Australian sun. We got sunburnt, we got stuck, and yes — we had at least one breakdown (maybe two).

But in the end? The dome stands. And we’re kinda proud of it.

Was it smart? Debatable.
Did we finish it? You’ll see.
Was it worth it? 1000%.

@The_Caretaker @ai6yr @teleclimber If I'm remembering correctly, a well-maintained cover doesn't have much room - there's a kind of hoop/ loop inside that you hook with the tool, and it blocks a fair amount (but not enough to keep out bees, maybe) of the opening. What makes this design so difficult is that it's on the ground, so it has to be flat; the material has to be sturdy enough to stand up to foot and wheeled traffic, but light enough to break with a crowbar if needed; and it has to be simple enough to open for utility workers to learn it and for civilians to be able to figure it out. This seems like a really worthy design project. Anyone know a high school science or civics teacher? #scienceProject #civicsProject #utilityCover #saveTheBees

When I was a kid at summer camp, we made "solar cookers"- except that they didn't cook anything! Turns out, just painting a shoebox black and lining it with foil doesn't work. I've been sour on #solarcooker projects with kids ever since, until now.
I decided to make it my end of year class project with my students and do it RIGHT. I made a prototype to teach myself before starting on theirs.
Now I'm obsessed with #solarcooking . This little #solaroven made from trash has cooked vegetable curry, Mexican rice, lentils (from dry!) cinnamon rolls, and blueberry cobbler (all #veganfood of course). I've devoured pages and pages of the Solar Cooking Wiki from SCI and everything solar cooking related at Low Tech Magazine. Help, this is amazing.
