Showtime, witches and werewolves! Check out Meton, the virtual mechanical lunar phase and eclipse calculator!
Humboldt part 2! This admirably concise biography offers a factual and nuanced picture of Humboldt's life and work, and critically interrogates previous portrayals.

Heureka: Meton, my virtual mechanical moon phase calculator, now also tracks the Draconic period as well as solar and lunar eclipses. Meton will deviate by one day every 60.5 years (synodic) and every 21.2 years (draconic) respectively. Feel free to drop me a message for details.
Meton, my virtual mechanical moon phase calculator, features two more gearwheels and now also tracks the Draconic moon cycle. While the Synodic cycle is quite precise (1 day deviation in ~60 years), the Draconic cycle is very inaccurate (1 day deviation in 3 years). Any suggestions?

New review: Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? is a whip-smart book on the history of taxonomy that I ignored for far too long.

That's cool - just found a film from the International Geophysical Year (1957) of the Moonwatch citizen science project, from Australia - and it says that it included DIY instruments... youtu.be/f1HTmXmTwX0?... #CitizenScience #ScienceHistory #Satellites

This week's #NewBooks at the library: I was chuffed to now also find an affordable copy of #Dinosaurs: Past and Present, Volume 2! Second, The Art and Making of #Arcane: League of Legends. Loved the series and thought to myself "if they publish a book with artwork...". And more #Buffon. There aren't many biographies on him - this 1972 classic is one of two on my wishlist. #Paleontology #Palaeontology #Palaeoart #Biography #HistoryOfScience #ScienceHistory #HistSci #Books #Scicomm #Bookstodon

Yo, witches and werewolves: Showtime!
This week's #NewBooks at the library: Late to the party, I know, but a collector's edition was all I needed to buy @hughhowey's Wool. I also found two inexpensive second-hand copies of OUP titles: Natural Selection & Beyond: The Intellectual Legacy of #AlfredRusselWallace (the Wallace biography I reviewed invited further reading) and #Overfishing: What Everyone Needs to Know. #Books #Scicomm #Bookstodon #Evolution #HistoryOfScience #ScienceHistory #HistSci #Oceans #MarineBiology
Today it is 247 years ago the world lost #CarlLinnaeus. The scholarly #biography The Man Who Organized Nature provides a full immersion in his life, revealing the polymath behind his reputation as the father of #taxonomy.
202 years ago today Alfred Russel Wallace, co-discoverer of the theory of #evolution, was born. What, you have not heard of him? Radical by Nature is a tremendously enjoyable biography of his long and remarkable life
