@tomcapuder

I'm a pretty committed atheist, so I'm probably not who you're asking.

But I did finish a couple degrees at a Catholic university, which had a strong school of natural sciences.

Through my casual interactions with Catholic faculty, including resident Brothers and Sisters, I happened to learn a little about Catholicism: I think it's more about having faith in people (and hope for them) than a blind faith in a god, or how any of us perceive a god.

I've also gained disdain for anyone who claims to be Christian, especially before (or without) showing it through their actions. That's just taking their lord's name in vain, which is prohibited by their own playbook--not that any of *those* people actually read or follow it.

I prefer the honesty of the #SatanicTemple .

According to past filings, the Oklahoman believed he was sent by "Elohim" to "fight crybaby Satan" by attacking Satanic Temple headquarters with an improvised explosive.

Not a great quote but let's assume it's accurate in its text and attribution:

"Like, I think it's OK to hate Jews if you hate them because they're Jewish and they wear a stupid f--king frisbee on their head and walk around thinking they're God's chosen people."
-Lucien Greaves

The word "hate" is one I prefer not to use.

Also, the condition "if" does some heavy lifting; if someone thinks of themself as "chosen" to receive favor because of some god and treats others as less because of it, I'm going to have a problem with that.

And interestingly enough that's the same rationale that the Nazis used to kill Jews.

Queer Satanic is dead; long live Queer Satanic

It’s official and it’s final: We won.
If The Satanic Temple were going to appeal its loss against the defendants it called “Queer Satanic”, the notice of appeal was due in King County Superior Court by 4:30 p.m. today. We have received no electronic notice of a filing, so we are very pleased to say that the case is finally concluded.

queersatanic.com/queer-satanic

The nontheistic religious organization used its for-profit corporation “United Federation of Churches LLC d/b/a ‘The Satanic Temple’ ” to sue four former members of its Washington State chapter from April 2020 till September 2024. They sued us in federal court, the Ninth Circuit Court, dragged us into giving depositions for the Southern District of New York, and sued us in King County Superior Court, but TST has lost everywhere it went. The claims that we always maintained were frivolous and without merit have been found so in every court TST made those claims by every judge who has looked at them. Now, a month after TST’s most recent loss, the deadline for the Temple’s appeal has come and gone, and so we’re done.

Years ago in dark times where it seemed like there would be no end to this and The Satanic Temple and its owners would never stop being vexatious litigants against us, we wrote the bottom section (in the link). The website’s administrator was supposed to add some sort of explainer and then publish it, keeping the site up and running for as long as that was feasible for them since we would be in no position to be involved anymore.

What it talks about has not come to pass — but in other ways, it certainly has. This was not sustainable indefinitely. The machine was breaking down for a long time, grinding metal on metal without pause, but it can be turned off now. “Non serviam” — until further notice, this machine is out of service.

Certainly, there is still research to be done and still other articles to be written about The Satanic Temple, its owners, and how they actually operate in contrast to how they present themselves. But to be done by us? That’s less clear.

We don’t plan to completely disappear, and there is still some tidying up to do, but mostly, there’s some much needed rest. Just as likely, there will be other fights that now we can focus on, given the way the world is going. In either case, this sabbatical may be indefinite.

“Queer Satanic” was never an organization, never a hierarchy, only a vibe. We were Heretical Satanists, heretics of heretics, so in the midst of defending ourselves from a lawsuit, we tried to put forward positive ideas and examples about what a more useful Satanism might look like; we tried to show a radical and rebellious way of approaching and acting in the world beyond just aesthetics of painting it black or upside-down Christianity slapped on bog-standard reactionary and liberal politics.

We didn’t do enough of it, and there is still so much more to be done.

For now at least, we leave you to it.

"What do Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church and the Satanic Temple have in common? They are both recognized as religions by the IRS. By the length of time doing business and by the number of customers, Christianity may like to think it is somehow superior. But according to the Constitution, the two are equal in the eyes of the law. And it is driving Christian Nationalists and other fundamentalist Bible-thumpers bananas.

Originally conceived to go wherever aggressive Christians dared to overstep, the Satanic Temple has now declared abortion an official ritual in its religion. The Temple has sued several states to have their adherents’ right to terminate a pregnancy legally recognized.

To that end, the Temple has expanded its mission to thwart Christian overreach with a campaign to support women’s civil reproductive rights — by making choice a religious right."

The Satanic Temple lost AGAIN, and ours is a full victory here

The King County Superior Court just granted our motion for summary judgment in full, dismissing all claims with prejudice and ruling on our declaratory judgment counterclaim we have the right to use "the Memes Page".

facebook.com/queersatanic

Huge congratulations to our good friends @QueerSatanic who have won yet another case against #TheSatanicTemple who were suing them for using a FB Page:

"It has been 1635 DAYS since The Satanic Temple filed their case against us in federal district court. We got it dismissed there once in February 2021; we got it dismissed again in January 2023 after TST re-filed. The Satanic Temple appealed the second loss to the Ninth Circuit and also re-filed part of the case in state court in April 2023 — notably after the three-year statute of limitations had run out. The Ninth Circuit affirmed most of the lower federal court decision but allowed TST to revive their defamation claims if they could specify what exactly had been said about them that was false and defamatory. Apparently, unable to do so, TST voluntarily dismissed the federal case against us.
Meanwhile, in 2022, TST sued Newsweek for writing about our case back in October 2021. The Satanic Temple dragged us into those proceedings to give depositions. TST sued a woman in Texas for making TikTok videos critical of them. TST has threatened more people than we can make a reliable count of with litigation both before and after us. Their agents have harassed us and our loved ones, and there have been long periods of misery and where it seemed like the courts would let them keep doing this sort of thing indefinitely.
But today we won. TST has lost every step of the way and shown themselves to be a toxic, abusive religious organization to everyone who has bothered to pay attention — tho unfortunately, too few people have. "

#TheSatanicTemple's lawsuit against #Chicago implodes after minister splits org

Continuing fallout from recent tantrum by #TST owner Doug “#LucienGreaves” Misicko wrecks another legal case, this time over #invocations at Chicago City Council

A day before a status hearing was set to go before a federal judge for a religious discrimination lawsuit by #TheSatanicTemple, the attorney representing the infernal religious organization notified the judge that that would no longer be necessary, voluntarily ending the case for good.

> Plaintiffs The Satanic Temple and Adam Vavrick and Defendant City of #Chicago, through their respective counsel, hereby stipulate that pursuant to Fed. R. Civ. P. 41 this case should be dismissed without costs or fees to either party.
-Stipulation to Dismiss – Document No. 35

The following day, July 24, Judge Joan Lefkow dismissed the cases with prejudice “with each party to bear its own costs and fees.”

#TheSatanicTempleInc. and #AdamVavrick, an ordained minister of the #SatanicTemple and a leader of the #TSTIllinois congregation, sought to deliver an invocation before a #ChicagoCityCouncil meeting. However, they were not invited after, TST claims, more than three years of asking to deliver an invocation and not being given an explanation for why they were not invited.

TST sued the city in federal court on May 3, 2023, alleging violations of the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause.

We wrote about the background of this whole thing in December 2023 and again in May 2024; in the latter, we also made a bit of a prediction there at the very end in reference to the scheduled trial date:

“Given TST’s usual burn-through rate and the ongoing major schism centered on TST Ministry, it will also be interesting to see if ‘Minister of Satan Adam Vavrick’ is even still associated with TST and ordained by the time 2025 rolls around.”

And wouldn’t you know it, a little more than a month after we said that, the plaintiff Vavrick announced he’d left TST's #SatanicMinistry.

Is it dead-naming to refer to “Lucien Greaves” as “Doug Misicko”?

No, it is not.

queersatanic.com/is-it-dead-na

Sometimes well-meaning people ask this question sincerely, but in practice, it usually feels like people raise and deploy the specter of dead-naming as a way to distract from all of the other criticisms of The Satanic Temple and its owners that are completely indefensible.

He is not calling himself names like “Greaves” or “Doug Mesner” out of a sincere desire to identify differently than his government name but because he is attempting to make it more difficult to hold him accountable as the owner of a collection of for-profit and tax-exempt corporations he solely or jointly controls totally.

Moreover, we’re still being sued by #TheSatanicTemple in ̷f̷e̷d̷e̷r̷a̷l̷ ̷c̷o̷u̷r̷t̷ ̷a̷n̷d̷ ̷n̷o̷w̷ King County Superior Court.

#TST is also still suing Newsweek and its reporter (but maybe not her anymore!) for writing about us. In addition, the #SatanicTemple is now suing a TikToker in Texas for talking about our case. Check the profile link for more.
