#Trump suggested that he could soon take executive action to end #SanctuaryCities, which generally are described as areas that limit cooperation w/ #ICE.

“We’re gonna end sanctuary cities for some of these jurisdictions that aren’t cooperating with law enforcement,” Trump said.

Trump didn’t provide details, but he has spent years criticizing Democrat-led jurisdictions for failing to impose harder-line #immigration policies.

#Republicans have already signaled that cities with policies like #Boston’s may lose federal #funding if they don’t change their approach.

“I don’t get to decide who comes into our country, & where they go after that,” Wu responded. “Our job is to keep people fed, & healthy, & safe when they arrive in our city. And we do that in order to make sure that everyone across our community is safe.”

This is absolutely outrageous. 🤬During a hearing on #SanctuaryCities today, Republican #JamesComer of #Kentucky refuses to let Democrat Congresswoman #AyannaPressley of #Massachusetts to enter into the record an article correctly reporting that US citizens commit #crimes far in excess of crimes committed by #immigrants. He refuses to even allow her to enter the title of the article. This is #censorship. This is #oppression. This is #WhiteMaleSupremacy. F*** Comer & f*** #HouseRepublicans.

From the article: "WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans in Congress are taking aim at four cities — often called “sanctuary cities” — over their policies limiting cooperation with immigration enforcement with a hearing this week that comes as President Donald Trump presses ahead with his campaign of mass deportations.

"Mayors Michelle Wu of Boston, Brandon Johnson of Chicago, Mike Johnston of Denver and Eric Adams of New York are set to appear Wednesday in front of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

"There’s no strict definition for sanctuary policies or sanctuary cities, but the terms generally describe limited cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. ICE enforces U.S. immigration laws nationwide but seeks state and local help, particularly for large-scale deportations, requesting that police and sheriffs alert them to people it wants to deport and hold them until federal officers take custody."

Migration is a foundational part of human history. JSTOR Daily has created this @Flipboard Storyboard, On the Move, which collates its reporting on the subject, covering everything from the history of sanctuary cities (they date back to the Bible) to how the language of disease and contagion has been used to stigmatize immigrants.
