Had a blast with the missus at Tantrumcon board gaming convention in Charlotte, NC this weekend. It was a super chill con with excellent vibes, and we played a ton of new games. Some standouts were:

Vengeance: Roll & Fight by Mighty Boards. mighty-boards.com/10/50/produc
This introduced me to roll & write games and while we (and others we talked to) had a pretty hard time picking up the rules, once we did, we were hooked. Reminds me of Hotline Miami in its fast paced, clear-the-room gameplay.

Castle Party by Devir Games. devirgames.com/castle-party
This is a flip & write game where you flip cards that tell you what shape to arrange monster cards in, then draw the monster symbols in your grid in that shape, grouping them strategically to earn points. Super easy to pick up, and very deep gameplay.

The Supershow by SRG Universe.

A collectable pro wrestling game that feels like an actual wrestling match. Each round feels like a collar-and-elbow lockup and plays out in unpredictable ways. The guys at the SRG booth were a hoot.

Its cute aesthetic and simplicity belie its extremely deep strategic mechanics. Seriously, replace the cats with Othello pieces and I'd believe this was an ancient game. You place cats on a grid, trying to get 3 in a line. Cats repel adjacent cats when placed, so you have to think like 6 turns ahead. I'm too dumb for this one, but its depth to complexity ratio makes it remarkable.

Today we have played #FitToPrint and I’m confident it’ll be a new regular family game. Youngest child got #Mycelia but we’ve not played it. We’ve just played a three hand parallel run of #UtopiaEngine which is a free #PrintAndPlay #RollAndWrite which eldest child likes (they won their game) but which didn’t engage me, even though I was doing fairly well up until I tried linking artefacts at the end.

I time stamped the hell out of this VOD, specially when talking about the rules, so people interested in learning how to play No Time To Dungeon can jump around to the relevant parts. Also stamped the parts I messed the rules so you can learn from my mistakes 😅

To round the weekend off, I finally introduced my group to Obsession, and they introduced me to The White Castle and Between Two Castles (loved the dueling cooperations with BTC and loved TWC’s action chaining)!

Also, I introduced my partner to roll/flip and writes for the first time with #IsleOfCats: Explore & Draw. We had a great time drawing very amateurish cats! Next time: map making with Cartographers (and then Rolling Realms)

Cartographers wasn't the first roll/flip and write that I played, but was the first one that used coloring. That clicked with me and made me think "I want more games like that!". So I made Chroma Conquest.

I have a bunch of other coloring games ideas. It's a concept that I'm really enjoying to get into.

Three Sisters was recommended to us as we started getting more and more into board games with the roll-and-write mechanism, and what an amazing recommendation it was! This game is great!

Roll the dice and pick what and where you want to focus your efforts across your little garden farm. Want to plant all the crops? Unlock a tractor for a chunky point boost? Fruit trees, an apiary, perennials?

There are so many ways to score points in this game of 8 rounds, and the combos fast start rolling in.

A really cosy and fun experience, we’re big fans.

What is everyone's favorite roll-and-write games (Or flip, spin, or whatever other mechanic exists)

We've just played Three Sisters and had a great time! While I didn't win, I did ended up getting that fancy tractor 🚜.

Still got Cartographers to try, and Fliptown is on its way which I'm excited for.
