The next problem with the #PentiumPro is more serious: the disk drive sometimes makes loud repeated clicks, as if it was trying to imitate an old alarm clock.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the reason why the computer ended up in the trash.

Also, I couldn't get the the PS/2 mouse to work despite the jumper being set correctly. It could be caused by the RTC battery being dead (there is an option in the BIOS about PS/2 mouse), but I'll need to investigate a bit more.

The first two problems quickly appeared when I powered the machine on.

First, the fan of the CPU cooler doesn't spin at all and is even hard to move by hand. Easy fix as I have a spare one lying around.

Second problem is more annoying: after nearly 30 years, the battery in the Dallas DS12887A RTC module is completely dead! I feel safer with a plain replacement than hacking the module open with the Dremel tool to attach an external battery.

In anticipation of June's Econet LAN Party at the National Museum of Computing in Bletchley, I've updated Elite over Econet.

It now supports flicker-free graphics, up to 100 players in multiplayer, better server support and more. Game on!

For more details and downloads see elite.bbcelite.com/hacks/elite

For tickets to the LAN Party on 7-8 June, see eventbrite.co.uk/e/econet-lan-

And for discussion on Stardot about the event, see stardot.org.uk/forums/viewtopi

See you there!

W 2021 pierwszy raz odbyło się wydarzenie pod nazwą MARCHintosh. Zainspirowani sukcesem projektów DOScember i SEPTandy użytkownicy zabytkowych komputerów spod znaku tęczowego jabłka postanowili każdego roku w marcu wspólnie tworzyć treści związane z tymi maszynami. Jedną z najciekawszych inicjatyw w ramach MARCHintosha jest z pewnością GlobalTalk o którym więcej w artykule na naszej stronie.

Having run out of Atari and TRS-80 retro podcasts, I'm digging back into other computers. Well, obviously not commode-odor. Oh, hey, I listened to Open Apple a few times! Now replaying that from start in… 2011.

This Apple computer company sounds interesting, but I hope they don't lose sight of making fun computers you can pop open and dig around in, and program in BASIC.

26 years ago today, the Melissa virus introduced itself, clogging Microsoft Exchange servers with e-mail messages promising racy attachments. Melissa was named for a dancer the virus author met in a Florida nightclub. #RetroComputing #VirusHistory #TechThrowback dfarq.homeip.net/the-melissa-v

A close friend went dumpster diving and was intrigued by a #CPU socket number he didn't know about.

Long story short, I have received a beautiful mid-tower #Pentium Pro 200 MHz for my birthday 😄

Motherboard is an AOpen AX65 with 64 MB of EDO RAM in two 72-pins SIMMs, PCI S3 Virge/DX, 3COM 3C590C, 4.3 GB Seagate Medalist, and the usual CD, CDRW and 3¼" floppy drives.

Boots to NT4 or #MSDOS 6.22 with Win3.11 from NT4's bootloader.

There are issues, though...

(🧵, but slow)

One last project before March ends! I worked on the Classic II again—the last time was back in August 2023. I recapped the new logic board, and now it starts! But I'm experiencing some video issues. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Looking at my old pictures in this thread, I see that the issue first appeared after I replaced the logic board. But now it happens with both the old and new logic boards.

If I put the working logic board in my Classic, it works perfectly! So what should I investigate on the analog side?

New auction delivery, it’s been a weird period where I’ve won a bunch of live auctions for far lower than eBay prices and … they’ve been a shock. Anyway, just a simple lot with a Speccy +3 and a TV game thing (not in my interest circle) no PSU for the Speccy, but that’s easy to fix #RetroComputing

*just a side note, I've just recently migrated to another instance, but left, won't go into details, but moderation was not up to par and some unacceptable/very illegal things where allowed in the TL for way too long. The instance off course does not condone any type of illegal content, but they just don't have enough moderators.

So here we are, at Vivaldi, great browser, great instance and the same old introduction.
