With a bunch of new folks likely coming into the fediverse in the coming days, it is time for a re- #introduction

I am a #Professor of #Physics at #QueensUniversity in Ontario, on secondment to #SNOLAB to serve as the Research Group Manager. SNOLAB is #Canada's deep underground science lab.

I am a #writer, mostly of non-fiction science books for general and specialized audiences.

I love federated social media. I love #teaching, #astronomy, #astrophysics, #DarkMatter, and #neutrinos.

A moment in our Media and Politics in Canada 🇨🇦 class today. These were our six wonderful seminar co-leaders. The class discussed time and space in Canadian media theory through Innis, Grant, McLuhan and other scholars of communication. They also vibed The Hallowe’en theme to everyone’s delight

Ray Price’s death was announced last week.

Ray’s mapping in the Canadian Rockies was instrumental in advancing our understanding of lithosphere dynamics and mountain building. A description of Ray’s career can be found in his Penrose award citation.

This #ThrowbackThursday let’s escape to “one night when the earth seems far away and the pulses beat fast to the sensuous music of the latest waltzes and the most tempting fox-trots” through an exciting 2017 article by Renata Colwell.

“Dance! Dance! Dance!: Youth Culture and Courtship at Queen’s University, 1910-1930” explores the social outrage caused by campus dance culture.

NOTCHES · Dance! Dance! Dance!: Youth Culture and Courtship at Queen’s University, 1910-1930What can a conflict over dancing at Queen’s University tell us about sexual mores in early-twentieth-century Ontario?

@jalefkowit I used to live in #KingstonOntario when I went to #QueensUniversity, which has a medical program and is partnered with a teaching hospital, and combined with the physics department, required enough oxygen to support Kingston Oxygen supply, KO2 for short.

We saw all these KO2 trucks driving around and came up with a tounge-in-cheek conspiracy theory... KO2 is an oxygen cabal! Stop supporting them by not breathing 🤣

It was before the whole "Big $MONOPOLY", but Big Oxygen!

“The spokesperson said the school’s deficit woes are rooted in the 10 per cent tuition cut and subsequent tuition freeze for #Ontario students implemented by the provincial government since 2019.

“The cumulative effect of these cuts combined with declines in international student enrolment and increasing inflationary pressures has led us to a situation where we now face a structural deficit,” #QueensUniversity zeroes.ca/@maleve/111768021868

I had a really wonderful time in #Kingston this past week. It started out rough on Sunday ... I picked up a mild stomach virus. But I was good by Monday evening and then was able to engage with my colleagues at #QueensUniversity on a range of issues: bubble chamber dark matter detector operations for #PICO, strategies for enhancing #neutrino-less double beta decay projects in #Canada, ways to engage more students at @SNOLAB, and more!

Not only does #QueensUniversity have an asteroid named in honour of the university, but now that asteroid has been observed to host a small orbiting companion!

Nice way to start the day, learning about both of these things.
