Goodness me, checked in on the #psychiatry sub-reddit today. The modern day practice of the specialty appears to involve a lot of drug-driven biochemical adjustments, often with multiple drugs involved. For depression, endogenous unipolar depression and/or bi-polar, #psychiatrists often use an NDRI (Norephinephrine Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor) plus an SSRI (Selective Serotonin Uptake Inhibitor), plus a freaking mood stabilizer - then there’s the pills to address the side-effects of the above. Damn, must be some pretty young pharma reps out there. And what’s with the prescription, off label, of #PsychiatricDrugs for things like sleep disorders? Health care today is broken and often off-track. I’m old enough to remember when psychiatrists administered ‘shock therapy’ (ECT) for adjustment reaction to adolescence. It is useful in intractable unipolar depression, but not much else.
