My name is Corey Johnston, and I’m an artist living in Eureka, CA. I do digital art that I put on stationery papers, greeting cards, notepads, and limited edition prints.

Since the last #PortfolioDay I’ve done a nice body of work, moving in a new direction while embracing elements of my previous stylistic endeavors. I’m very very much enjoying this new trajectory, and continue to learn new aspects of it that inspire me, opening a world of possibility. I’m very happy to continue my exploration in the future!

This piece is called The Farmer and the Fox. It’s based on the fable by Aesop.

The story goes like this: A farmer decides to tie an oil-soaked rope around the tail of a fox as revenge for it breaking into his chicken coop. He lights it on fire, and the fox runs into his fields, lighting them on fire.

The farmer gets no harvest that year.

This story could have many morals, but the one I’m interested in is the idea of pointless revenge and ruthlessness. When one becomes self-righteous in their vindictiveness, things can often turn around to devastating effect. So don’t be a dick.

And I think that’s a lesson a LOT of us—especially in the US on the right—have forgotten. It has been said that “the cruelty is the point”, and I believe that’s true. I just hope karma strikes back soon.

This is available as a greeting card here: https://goimagine.com/the-farmer-and-the-fox-single-illustrated-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

I don’t use any sort of generative image assistance to help me make these. They’re all done slowly in Procreate, and printed, packaged, and posted from my own home. I don’t do print-on-demand drop shipping.

This image is entirely Human-Made. No generative artificial “assistance” to “save time”. It was done stroke by stroke, one at a time, carefully thought out and chosen each step of the way. I used Procreate on my iPad Pro, and I print and package and post each greeting card from my own studio myself—no manufacturing middle-men or drop shipping.

This is my take on The Little Mermaid, a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.

I really love all the blues and purples. I think the pop of gold in the top around the ship is sort of reminiscent of a sunset.

And as part of a set of six fairy tale greeting card here: https://goimagine.com/little-mermaid-single-illustrated-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

I don’t use artificial image generation to “assist” me on this. There is none of it in my process. All of my art is Human-made using Procreate on my iPad, stroke by stroke.

This image was inspired by the work of Frances Macdonald McNair, who did watercolors around the turn of the 20th century. I found her work by accident one day, and then fell into a rabbit hole that lead me to discover the work of the Glasgow Four and Frances’s sister, Margaret.

I deeply love their work!

I decided to do a piece that was magical and haunting, and incorporate some texture brushes in the process. I use Procreate, and was able to incorporate multiple layers of textures, which I really love.

I made a greeting card of this one, and it can be found here:
https://goimagine.com/night-blooms-single-illustrated-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

it’s also part of a six-card variety pack of similar “Red Cloak” images:

I don’t use any sort of artificial image generation tools. It’s all me, stroke by stroke. Here’s the livestream recording of when it was made: https://makertube.net/w/6mHZNGaLYJdcpPN5zBtZas

this piece is called “Forest Stag”, and it’s supposed to appear symmetrical. I features to women in teal cloaks walking on opposite sides of a tree, but it’s also the head of a stag deer with the branches becoming antlers.

This piece was done entirely in Procreate, without any artificially generated image nonsense. I do it all by hand one stroke at a time on my iPad Pro.

This piece is called “These Three Boys”. It’s actually a piece of fanart—my first ever!

It’s inspired by the work of Ryan Cahill and his book series, The Bound and the Broken.

In doing this piece, I realized something that changed my perspective on the history of art… A massive , MASSive amount of our great classic art pieces in the Western vein are actually fanart. They illustrate moments from stories, taking various characters from various “IPs” and inventing art. Religious art is, essentially, fan art when looked at from that perspective. A huge amount of art illustrates famous moments from famous stories and histories, like stories of Greek and Roman myth, or fables. Or even famous people doing things, like this King conquers this thing or marches on that thing…

It’s really quite stunning how prevalent Fanart actually is when looked at from a certain perspective.

So this piece is in reference to the three main characters in Cahill’s epic fantasy series. It is also simultaneously inspired by the work of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh.

You can find it as a greeting card here:https://goimagine.com/these-three-boys-single-illustrated-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/

It is also part of this variety pack of images here: https://goimagine.com/art-nouveau-variety-pack-of-greeting-cards-5x7-with-envelopes/

i do all my work in Procreate, without artificial generative “assistance”.

Today, I’m starting a new image based on the fable "The Tortoise and the Hare” by Aesop.

I’ll be doing it live on Twitch, Moonbeam, and, once again (I am very very happy to say), giving it a shot on MakerTube!

1-4:00pm PDT (UTC-7)

makertube.net/w/ww2zPQGGtEL5qS

twitch.tv/coreyartus

moonbeam.stream/Continuum

I’ll be drinking a pot of tea, chilling out, listening to soothing music, and doing my best to narrate my process using Procreate.

Lurkers are very welcome!

Okay, so I don't know what happened, but today I decided to just try livestreaming to MakerTube just to see if it would work this time, and things went beautifully. No disconnect issues, no stopping and starting... I'm very happy!

So I'm going to start streaming to MakerTube again! Woohoo! 1-4:00pm PDT (UTC-7) on Tuesdays and Wednesdays!

Here's the recording of today's stream:

makertube.net/w/5ap4y8nW6VH7bG

I got his haunting "Three Little Pigs" image done today! Woohoo!

I’m going live today on Twitch and Moonbeam to continue my Art Nouveau image of The Three Little Pigs.

1-4:00pm PDT (UTC-7)

twitch.tv/coreyartus

moonbeam.stream/Continuum

I’ll be listening to soft music, indulging in a pot of tea, and generally narrating my process for those following along.

Lurkers are very welcome!

I’ll be uploading the recording to MakerTube when it’s all done, in case you want to throw it up in the background sometime when you’re doing your own work! I really enjoy doing that—it sometimes “fills the room” and makes me feel less alone, you know?

makertube.net/a/coreyartus/vid

I’ve put another greeting card on my Goimagine Shop. It’s another Art Nouveau piece but without a specific tale. Some have said it reminds them of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland! Or maybe an adult Little Red?

goimagine.com/garden-blooms-si

This was an early experiment with abstraction and the stylized raised filigree appearance I have fallen in love with. The card is blank inside, and printed in my studio on my special high-end 8-color printer at 400dpi, so there’s a rich amount of color and detail. No artificial generation stuff either—just me and Procreate.

Here’s the speedpaint: makertube.net/w/5aefUg3D88UCeo

I got this new image done today. It’s inspired by fable, The Lion and the Mouse.

I’ve never done a fable before. And I think I really like them. There’s something simple, pure, and spiritual about them that feels a bit forced in fairytales and folktales. They’re clearly much more allegorical. And I think there’s a really strong place for that.

Maybe I’m just getting older? And tire of the antics of so many misguided humans in real life that I long for stories that aren’t ultimately about mistakes made by stupid people?

Maybe.

Regardless, I thought I’d share! Again, it’s in an Art Nouveau-inspired illustrative style. All by me in Procreate—no generative BS. This will be a greeting card soon.

And here’s the speedpaint: makertube.net/w/ryJyzsGQpt4yPq

My take on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is now available as a greeting card in my Goimagine Shop. It’s a lavishly textured Art Nouveau piece with the appearance of depth.

This was made entirely in Procreate, without any artificial generative processes.

Here’s the speedpaint: makertube.net/w/1ojvHNGq64fbCa

I got this new piece finished on my livestream yesterday. It’s based on “The Frog Prince”. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and the plant chain brush created by Maddy Bellwoar for Procreate ( artbymaddy.com/ ) was perfect for my willow branches!

I absolutely love texture, and I love Art Nouveau, and I love storytelling, so these images I’m doing really make my heart sing!

Here’s the speedpaint: makertube.net/w/tJQWn6b8gtHF8D

And here are my artist links: coreyartusimageryinfo.carrd.co

I’ll be getting this available on my art shop as a greeting card soon!

I’m going live today on Moonbeam and Twitch to start a brand new piece based on The Three Little Pigs!

twitch.tv/coreyartus

moonbeam.stream/Continuum

I’ll be using Procreate to do a richly textured and painterly Art Nouveau abstract stylization inspired by the tale. All me—no artificial image “assistance” nonsense.

If you enjoy lurking and not engaging, this is the stream for you! You are more than welcome!

I usually have a pot of tea, some gentle music in the background, and an ongoing narration of what I’m doing. I try to make it chill, inviting, and light. Throw me up in the corner and try working on your own art!

If you miss it, the stream recording will be uploaded to MakerTube later today.

makertube.net/a/coreyartus/vid

Last night, in a desperate attempt to get my mind off all the insanity, I started a new image so my brain would stop grinding and I could focus on something constructive.

It’s a challenging thing right now to keep creating, to keep inventing, to keep adding to the fabric of the universe to counteract all the bad. I think of it as a sort of artistic duty to keep making, to counter the evils that are so proud right now with some sort of antidote…

It’s important to remember not to retreat into complete escapism and turn a blind eye. But it is also important to try to feed and sustain the soul and heart that’s being injured and bruised.

For me, trying to create in the face of so much hate is sometimes the only aspect of agency I feel I have. It’s one of the few things I can control right now. So I’m not going to stop doing it.

This is my piece, “The Ugly Duckling”, as well as the link to the speedpaint vid on MakerTube.

makertube.net/w/qX4ZSB94GCxEY2

Don’t let them make you feel your creativity is just a simple diversion or distraction from reality, and that you should be doing other more substantive things. It is more than that. it’s your responsibility to “add" when so many are “subtracting". It’s what you can do better than anyone else.
