Thank you for Being

Cemetery work
After dazed and confused
Trimmed around the graves
Nice and tight
Til my work is done, fine
Now sit back and enjoy
The wind through the pines
Of a life, and some others too
The pines are gone now
The hill is still there
So are the graves
Smiling back
Blissful quiet.

In memory of Sander Questad,
1892 -- 1983, Baltic Township

Do you hear
the winds of autumn
rubbing softly against the doors
scent of osmanthus
among lessons and tasks dullsome

Do you hear
the gentle drizzle
tapping on the windowsills
a playful chime of invitation
in the school hall I sit still

"and you cannot know"
I am not here
"both the location and speed"
I cannot see clear
"of particles so tiny"
of short-lived ideas
"with energy they are freed"
that come and disappear

I watch and listen
my mind drifting away
like an electron
with velocity flying astray

"and with that concludes our lecture today"
was that it?
"should you have any questions"
two hours sure is brief
"come and ask"
sorry, professor
"do not be afraid"
I was never here

#Haikus are simply any phrase of poetry, rhyming or not, which has exactly 17 syllables.

They don't have to be deep or philosophical or even serious. #Poetry can be fun. My favorite #haiku writer is #TomWilson (aka "Biff" in the #BackToTheFuture franchise). He has such humorous gems as:

"Life matches on, faster and faster,
But the fact is you can't rush toast."

"Danny Bonaduce
prob'ly wouldn't make a good babysitter."

" #FredFlintstone ordered ribs every week
He had to know they'd tip his car."

More of his #humor in the video link.

Do not ask your children
to strive for extraordinary lives.
Such striving may seem admirable,
but it is the way of foolishness.

Help them instead to find the wonder
and the marvel of an ordinary life.
Show them the joy of tasting
tomatoes, apples & pears.

Show them how to cry
when pets and people die.
Show them the infinite pleasure
in the touch of a hand.

And make the ordinary come alive for them.

The extraordinary will take care of itself.

- William Martin

Here's an old poem of mine that I just found in a dusty digital drawer, while looking for something else.
Enjoy.

Chained to light

We fear the dark

for we know what we need
can only be found in exile.

Yet we stay where we are
frozen with dreaming

chained to light.
