“Interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS is the fastest object ever recorded in our Solar System. It is moving at 209,000 kilometers (130,000 miles) per hour, likely sped up by gravitational slingshots from stars and nebulae over the billions of years it has been drifting through interstellar space.“ ~ The Downlink #PlanetarySociety #Downlink
Planetary Society Petition Against NASA Science Cuts
Open to signatures from across the globe. Please #boost - for many of us it is the only action we can take, so let's take it!
The current administration's 2026 budget request includes a staggering 47% cut to NASA's science programs as part of a 25% cut to NASA overall. This is an extinction-level event for the Earth and space science communities, upending decades of work and tens of billions in taxpayers' investment.
My favorite t-shirt right now.
#Science lobbying is important.
The #PlanetarySociety has a petition to call on Congress to reject the 47% cut of @nasa 's science budget. Which will be horrible!
They only need 5000 people to sign by 12 June and people worldwide can sign. I'm surprised they haven't reached that number yet.
So help save #science . Sign the #petition !

If you are concerned about the proposed 50% cut to #NASA's science budget, then write your representative in congress. The #PlanetarySociety provides on online form that will only take 2 minutes of your time:
The #PlanetarySociety will also be holding three training sessions for learning skills to effectively advocate for space science.

I was recently in Washington, D.C., as part of a group of ordinary citizens talking to Congress about why we love space and why we support NASA funding. Here are my final thoughts and reflections about this experience:

I recently returned from a trip to D.C. to help advocate for NASA funding. I'll have more to say about that on my blog sometime next week.
But part of my trip got me thinking about the life of a writer, and that's my topic for this month's Insecure Writer's Support Group post.

I am in DC today and tomorrow as part of a group advocating (as private citizens, not professional lobbyists) for space exploration.
“Because the Moon is getting smaller in our skies, total solar eclipses won't go on forever. In about 620 million years, they'll only happen when the Moon is at its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit. The last total solar eclipse will occur in about 1.2 billion years.“ - The Downlink #PlanetarySociety #Downlink
“The Sun is 400 times larger in diameter than the Moon. But because the Sun is also 400 times farther away from Earth than the Moon (most of the time), both objects appear to be the same size from the perspective of Earth.” - The Downlink #PlanetarySociety #Downlink

Join the #PlanetarySociety! There is a big #TotalEclipse coming up April 8. There won't be another in the USA for 4 decades! The Planetary Society works to support and advocate for science and exploration. They will have great programs around the #eclipse www.planetary.org https://science.nasa.gov/eclipses/future-eclipses/eclipse-2024/where-when/
“Solar cycles are hard to predict. The next solar maximum was expected to happen in 2025, but recent observations have bumped that forward to 2024. Scientists had also predicted that this cycle would be weak, but instead the Sun is more active than it’s been in over 20 years.“ - The Downlink #PlanetarySociety #Downlink
What is Venus' quasi-moon Zoozve?
Venus and Mercury are the only planets in the Solar System without moons, but that’s not the whole story.
