The pagoda complex Wat Sampeou/Sompov at the top of Phnom Sampeou, "Ship mountain", outside Battambang is a concentrated area of temples and variations. With a fantastic view to the surrounding Cambodian countryside.

Walk up, or get a driver. It is worth it. But bevare of the monkeys, they are overly friendly because they expect to get, or steal, food.

At the top of the stairs for those who decide to walk up, you are greeted with this gate and the golden lotus leaf with a wanderer in center.

The caves on this and the other small mountain hills in this cluster carry with it stories of tradition, happiness and deep tragedy. It is worth spending some time walking these hills.

And by sunset, you should take a seat at the foot of the hills, near the bat cave. There you can see thousands of bats leave for the nights hunt. It is a fantastic sight because of the amounts of hunting animals.

Then, go back to Battambang for the night, and enjoy food at one of the open air restaurants near the river.

A spot to enjoy the slow, relaxing hours before sunset

The riverside walk along the west side of Ton Le Sap river and east of Sisowath Quay blvd stretches nearly 4 kilometers. That is past the junction where Ton Le Sap joins the mighty Mekong river in front of the Royal Square and the Royal Palace.

It is a nice walk, and deeply needed when the day is hot and the sun is beating down. There is always a cooling breeze there. And for people who learns and experience places and cities by walking, fresh, moving air is always welcome.

In the evening, the riverside fills up by locals socializing, playing, exercising, eating, drinking, dating and selling. It is hard to say if it is more lively there than in the old town behind Sisowath Quay, or the heavy trafficked river filled with boats on the other side.

It is well worth spending some time there to see and understand Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
