"This argument is absurd!" - filled w/ dozens of exclamation marks, this federal judgement hammers the administration. I work at this law firm, so it's great to hear; the DOJ hasn't appealed in their similar losses (I've a friend at Perkins Coie, who also won), so things look good for us.

news.bloomberglaw.com · WilmerHale Wins in Court as Judge Throws Out Executive OrderBy Roy Strom

Jennifer Rubin at The Contrarian explains how Judge Beryl Howell (DC Circuit) threw the book at the Trump regime in her summary judgment overturning the EO against the law firm Perkins Coie.

Rubin also chides the media for failing to point out consistently that EO’s are NOT laws and that most of Trump’s weird pronouncements will turn out to be just so much hot air.

The Contrarian · Putting Trump’s threats in writing doesn’t make them lawBy Jennifer Rubin

A federal judge has struck down U.S. President Donald Trump's executive order targeting law firm Perkins Coie, saying it “violates the Constitution and is thus null and void.” "No American President has ever before issued executive orders like the one at issue in this lawsuit targeting a prominent law firm with adverse actions to be executed by all Executive branch agencies but, in purpose and effect, this action draws from a playbook as old as Shakespeare, who penned the phrase: 'The first thing we do, let’s kill all the lawyers,'" U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell wrote in her opinion, in which she issued a permanent injunction.

#JennerBlock [employed Andrew Weissmann] — Judge Bates, another a George W. Bush appointee, set a 5:45PM hearing

Last Fri, #PerkinsCoie [worked for Hillary Clinton] got a TRO while the case moves forward.

New court filing: #PerkinsCoie v. #DOJ re #Trump #ExecutiveOrder punishing the #law firm

The Trump had filed to disqualify Judge Beryl Howell, basic #JudgeShopping.

Denied.

“Though this adage is commonplace, and the tactic overused, it is called to mind by defendants' pending motion to disqualify this Court: ‘When you can't attack the message, attack the messenger.’“

The Chief of Staff for #PamBondi, the United States Attorney General, posted this attack on influential conservative legal mind #MikeLutig.

For those who don’t know, #Trump issued an EO targeting the law firm #PerkinsCoie. The firm’s attys are barred from entering federal buildings (federal courts are federal buildings) & removed their security clearances. Michael Sussman, a fmr Perkins Coie atty was involved in Trump’s first impeachment.

"This is nothing less than government compelled speech – a textbook #FirstAmendment violation. The #government is explicitly forcing a private entity to dedicate resources to supporting specific #political initiatives. That a major #law firm would accept such an obviously #unconstitutional demand, rather than challenge it as #PerkinsCoie did, represents a complete abdication of their professional responsibilities"

Yesterday a #Federal judge barred parts of an insane illegal heavy handed and chilling childlike #DJT #ExecutiveOrder targeting exclusively employees and clients of a large influential #DC #beltway #lawfirm he doesn't like.

Known as #PerkinsCoie , the 100+ yr old firm started in #Seattle and has long represented biz & top tech clients including #Amazon & #Microsoft etc, as well as many other #Fortune500 names .

The #RWNJ #HoiPolloi anger at the firm has to do with the fact #PerkinsCoie attorneys helped commission the embarrassing and disputed #SteeleDossier that included allegations against a failed NJ casino operator turned political candidate.who eventually became President TWICE!

The far reaching petty #policestate and draconian #Drumpf overreach would've made it virtually impossible for #employees or any of the 1000+ #attorneys at the firm to do biz in #DC . The order barred firm partners from even speaking to #federalemployees, or to physically enter any govt #property including #courtrooms etc.

Update: Judge temporarily parts of Trump EO on Perkins Coie

Judge compared the president to the Queen of Hearts in “Alice in Wonderland,” noting that the rash queen’s outbursts — “Off with their heads!” — are entertaining to read about but “cannot be the reality we are living” under our Constitution.

Judge indicates Trump’s order likely violates the First Amendment for retaliating against protected speech and that it also likely runs afoul of due process protections and the Perkins Coie’s clients’ Sixth Amendment right to counsel.

“issuing an executive order targeting the firm based on the president’s dislike of the political positions of the firm’s clients or the firm’s litigation positions is retaliatory and runs head-on into the role of First Amendment protection.”
