“Sadie shaved off a sliver and put it in her mouth. “I swear that woman has a talent for not cooking.”
“Do I have to eat it?” Lizzie asked.
“No, you don’t,” Sadie said.
“But what are you going to say when she asks you about it?” I asked.
Lizzie cleared her throat. “Miss Watson, dat sum conebread lak I neva before et.”
“Try ‘dat be,’ ” I said. “That would be the correct incorrect grammar.”
“Dat be sum of conebread lak neva I et,” she said.
“Very good,” I said.”

« Orbital » a éclipsé le grand favori « James » de #PercivalEverett, projet d‘aventures de Huckleberry Finn de #MarkTwain à rebours : l’idée étant que les esclaves du Dixie font exprès de parler en langage de camouflage, infantilisé, grammaire délibérément incorrecte, mais dont l’usage est réservé aux rencontres avec des Blanc·hes pour éviter toute provocation – on parle un anglais sophistiqué et impeccable sinon, et l’ami de Huckleberry Finn, « Jim », est en réalité plutôt un « James », expert des Lumières qui s’imagine en débat intérieur avec #Voltaire sur sa notion de liberté. Prochaine visite à une librairie anglophone dans pas trop longtemps. 3/4

Couverture de l’édition originale de James chez Doubleday, page entièrement noir sauf pour le lettrage et un petit dessin de jeune homme avec baluchon sur l’épaule en vignette dans le J de James. en réminiscence à l’ancienne histoire de Mark Twain où ce genre de hobo bag stéréotypisé fait sans doute partie de l’ambiance.
