MikeDunnAuthor<p>San Francisco says it is following the state guidelines for speeding ticket fees. So what, it still looks bunk, considering those cameras are disproportionately in low-income communities. And so what if a person on Public Assistance only has to pay $10 for driving 11 mph above the speed limit, or $20 for going 16 mph over the speed limit, compared with the $50-$100 the rest of us have to pay. If they're on Public Assistance, they probably don't have an extra $10-20 to give the city. </p><p>But it's worse than that. A person could rack up several camera-enforced tickets without even knowing it, since it takes a while for the city to send those notices out. And then what? Bench warrants for unpaid tickets that have racked up? Suspended licenses? Debtors prisons for speeding tickets?</p><p>And what happens to their insurance rates? Too many moving violations and they could get dropped entirely. But that doesn't improve public safety if they continue to drive anyway because they still have to get their kids to a school that they've been assigned that happens to be on the other side of town and then still have to get to a low wage job across the bay.</p><p><a href="https://blog.photoenforced.com/2025/04/sf-speed-camera-locations-where-they.html" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">blog.photoenforced.com/2025/04</span><span class="invisible">/sf-speed-camera-locations-where-they.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/workingclass" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>workingclass</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/traffic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>traffic</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/pedestriansafety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>pedestriansafety</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/insurance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>insurance</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sanfrancisco" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sanfrancisco</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/taxes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>taxes</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ClassWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ClassWar</span></a></p>
MikeDunnAuthor<p>Public Safety or Just More Monitoring of Poor and Working-Class Communities of Color?</p><p>San Francisco has recently installed speed and license plate cameras in various parts of the city. They are currently watching you. You might even get a "Courtesy Warning Notice" letting you know they've caught you speeding. However, after the warning period expires (soon), they will start sending out tickets with cash penalties.</p><p>Ostensibly, these are supposed to reduce speeding and, consequently, pedestrian and bicycle fatalities. However, if you look at this map of where the 10 license plate readers are located, half of them are located on 3rd St, in the working-class, largely African-American and immigrant community of Bayview-Hunters Point, with one more on Geneva, in the also working-class and largely immigrant Excelsior District, while there are only 2 located downtown. Yet, the overwhelming majority of pedestrian and bike related fatalities occur downtown.</p><p>You can see where the cameras are located at this website <a href="https://blog.photoenforced.com/2025/04/sf-speed-camera-locations-where-they.html" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">blog.photoenforced.com/2025/04</span><span class="invisible">/sf-speed-camera-locations-where-they.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/sanfrancisco" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sanfrancisco</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/speedcameras" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>speedcameras</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/traffic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>traffic</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/pedestriansafety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>pedestriansafety</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/racism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>racism</span></a></p>
kimu<p>I’m a scientist &amp; an engineer, so I have convinced the teen that we should systematically collect data on every street crossing in our neighborhood. kimu<p>It shouldn’t take someone dying to get action. </p><p>And yet. Since Dot Dobbins was killed by a driver on Sunday, Nashville has installed new signage at the crosswalk and trimmed the trees that other neighbors pointed out were blocking visibility of signs. Within a few blocks, I lose count of spots where I’ve almost been hit by drivers. No improvements outside this one intersection.</p><p>ACTION instead of REACTION to preventable tragedy is what we need. <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/VisionZero" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VisionZero</span></a> <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/PedestrianSafety" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PedestrianSafety</span></a></p>

This might seem like a “so what” issue, except it obscures visibility of pedestrians crossing the street for drivers, which is why it’s illegal to park in these areas.
