Given ongoing FOSS governance concerns with #OrganicMaps, I modified my "Convert Google Maps saved places" tool to explicitly support @CoMaps instead: https://rudokemper.github.io/google-maps-places-to-comaps/

I installed @CoMaps earlier and transferred my bookmarks from @organicmaps. It was unsurprisingly seamless given the apps' shared codebase. CoMaps' slightly different map color scheme threw me off just a li'l bit though.
Today, I tested the "Record Track" feature in @organicmaps during my bike ride in Bergen, Norway.
I’m already a fan of Organic Maps, and this feature worked very well for tracking my route on GrapheneOS.
Highly recommended for anyone looking to log their outdoor adventures!
@ThePfromtheO @trailspotting Essentially, there was a rift in the community and it caused some of the main contributors of Organic Maps to make a fork, which they've called CoMaps. This happened really recently so the two apps are almost identical at the moment. We'll see how it plays out.
Personally I'm going with #CoMaps instead of #OrganicMaps, based on my passing familiarity with the people involved with it. But only time will tell in what way they'll diverge.
@trailspotting
We'll see. I've never used #OrganicMaps because I was using #OsmAnd~ and then I directly switched to #CoMaps.
Do #OrganicMaps and #CoMaps have the same features? Or they are independent one from the other now?
I don't know much about this topic, so pls tell me if you do.
@KoosPol @organicmaps Many of the people working on #CoMaps were extremely prominent contributors for Organic Maps before the fork. In particular I recognize pastk and map-per. This is a huge blow for #OrganicMaps, no matter what they say.
I don't think there's any point trying to get a comment out of them though.
Alas, #CoMaps fell at the first hurdle in my test of #Navi software - it doesn't show #speed limit nor #GNSS speed on the screen on #AndroidAuto - a big missing feature! #OrganicMaps (which it is forked from) doesn't have this either, there's an open issue for it but 0 reply / acknowledgement from the devs..
(Curiously the speeds are shown if you use the device standalone, and other Android Auto apps do have this display so its not a Google UI restriction..)
So I will stick to #MagicEarth for the moment..

Help choose a logo for CoMaps navigation app: https://codeberg.org/comaps/Governance/issues/102 !
App is already available on #Fdroid (as well as official android/iphone stores), but it is currently using temporary text logo.
(#CoMaps is community-led fork of #OrganicMaps, a smooth #FOSS navigation app using offline #OpenStreetMap data. It's extra advantages are: being fully privacy-respecting, nonprofit, fully transparent regarding all donations and finances, and being built by community for community)
So I've just started using @organicmaps as an alternative to Google Maps and been really liking it so far! A little rough around the edges but very much comparable in both feature comparability and experience, definitely a keeper!
One of the things I love about #OrganicMaps BTW is that they are offline.
Once while traveling in the mountains of northern Georgia, despite having downloaded Georgia map ahead of time in Google Maps, I lost cell signal and the *app stopped working* without any strong indication and I got very very lost and ended up in North Carolina.
This can never happen with Organic Maps because it is offline all the time.
I've been using #OrganicMaps on #Android as replacement for Google Maps.
So far so good.
The only complaints are that I sometimes need traffic because I live in a traffic hell and the map data often does not include a business, in particular, that I'm heading to...
So I made an account at #OpenStreetMaps and started adding the missing businesses I find.
It is a stupid easy way for you to contribute to an open project. You should try it. Help round out the data where you live!

So.
