@snow IMHO #piracy should only be considered "#theft" [with damages being limited to the cost of properly licensing it!] if the pirated material was still offered for licensing new under fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms.

In the past, #EA did offer to replace broken discs / cartridges for a nominal fee [AFAIK €10 per disc or €15 for double-discs] if people mailed in the original (broken) media. I'd say that is should apply to everything, tho granted that only allows people in theory to deal with #DiscRot (assuming the publisher is able and willing to perpetually honour this service), not allowing them to legally attain new licenses.

#Valve & #Steam legally workaround this by merely providing access and not a #license per-se.

  • Still, I think #piracy in almost all cases is (as GabeN correctly said:) "A services problem!" and if a product is fairly priced and then people will be willing to pay for it.

I just think that the rampant Enshittification of even #PhysicalMedia is unsustainable and I wish for an #OpenSource #competitor to #BDXL and it's #OnlineDRM!

Worse is even the #Tablet market: #Android #Tablets may be plentyful if you just go sheer listings, but in terms of #MarketShare they are negigible in "the global north" and thus not interesting for #developers to even bother adapting or testing for unless they themselves are #GAFAMs.

  • It's really fucking sad when @thunderbird is one of the few #Apps that I know that properly use Android Tablets' screen estate at all. Allegedly #Microsoft's own Apps do so as well but I myself have no #AndroidTablet and can't bring myself over the gag reflex trying to sideload #OneNote or any other App and having to deal with yet another shitty account...

Whereas on #iPadOS you get AA+ and #IndieGames worth their money by a long shot.

  • Don't even get #developers like @fuchsiii started on how piss-poor premium Apps on #Android sell and how that Tablet segment is essentially dead outside of markets where people can buy a house and a years' worth of necessities for the price of a single #iPad...

And that's why there are only #PayToLoose / #P2L aka. "#PayToWin" / #P2W games for #Android as #piracy is rampant and statistically noone is willing to pay for a #OneTimePurchase #Game on that platform.

@CenTdemeern1 +9001%

OFC they gonna axe #Windows & #MicrosoftOffice anyway in favour of #subscription-only #Saas like #XboxGamePass, #Office365 / #Microsoft365 & #Azure because that's where the real margins are, not with #OneTimePurchase products!

@getimiskon Lets just say, I hope #Gimp3 gets more than a move to #GTK3 but a complete overhaul in #UI & #UX...

They just work out of the box.

@puppygirlhornypost2 @navi Precisely!

Because selling people #OneTimePurchase #Software isn't as profitable as #Subcriptions!

@anthropy the problem is less of a technical possibility but that it would taint the setup with unlicensed (or rather violating the EULA of Windows) parts, thus making it not feasible...

I think it'll only stall the inevitable: #Microsoft cancelling #OneTimePurchase #Sotware in favour of more profitable #Cloud & #SaaS-offerings...

atomicpoet.orgChris Trottier (@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org)Here’s my final point about how wide the gap is between the PC and PS5’s gaming library.Let’s say I wanted to play my old PS2 game discs on my PC. Can I do that? Well, yes, I actually can – and it’...

If anyone wounders why #MobileGaming is fucked for over a decade now to the point that there seems to be only #PayToLoose #Shovelware getting pissed out and advertised, then I'd recommend you to watch this summary and realize that EVERY BIG GAMING COMPANY wants to "go whaling" and "#PayToWin" is just an easy way to maximize #profit, minimize #effort and have a big #cashout.

So that's why you find less and less #OneTimePurchase #MobileGames at all, because #capitalism and #greed lead to #Enshittification!

@shaknais Tho #Adobe did so as a.means to kill #UsedLicense market as they had bern forced by a Court in #Germany to allow people to resell their used copies of #CS6 to others.

Same reason why #Autodesk killed #OneTimePurchase #licenses: corporate #greed!

  • And yes I still hate myself for not having bought that "hobbyist #NonCommercial" license for #Eagle when I had the €125 to get it because I could've used that on projects later on. But then again that's yet another readon to learn #KiCAD then...

@puppygirlhornypost @Elizafox Exactly!

They'd likely have to rewrite entire portions or the entire Kernel, Drivers and Userland and would likely brick so much in the process that they'd get compatibility worse than the latest #Wine snapshot.

Personally, I do believe that #Microsoft will instead of "#WSL" (which should actually be named #Linux subsystem for #Windows, not the other way around because it's wrong!) basically contribute #API & #ABI #documentation to Wine and start officially & commercially supporting that...

After all, more and more #Flagship products like #MSSQL #Server are available for #Linux & #Docker and already #Azure for the most paart runs Linux because even #MSFT couldn't make #WindowsServer / #HyperV scale-out for them...

It's only a matter of time till some Board members will be unbaply enough about #CCSS / #OneTimePurchase #Software #ROI and will axe that in favour of #Xbox / #XboxGamePass, #Office365 / #Microsoft365 / #Dynamics365 and #Outlook.com because that's where the real margins are - with the added bonus of killing the #UsedSoftware #License Market just like #Adobe did...

I'd not be surprised if instead if #Windows12 we get a modified #RHEL / #SLED / #Ubuntu / #Debian / #illumos clone with Wine on top or a #subscription-based Wine-alike #Runtime (similar to #OracleJRE)...

@Natanox @fuchsiii just like #Valve does on #Steam:

You don't own those games but merely get a perpetual license to access these games...

Only on actual licenses you have some sort of "ownership" as per #UseSoft - case where the original owner can't ban or restrict the resale of your license and adjacent media...

Which is why #Adobe canceled #OneTimePurchase licenses: Because they got forced by a court to allow #UsedSoftware #License brokers to sell used copies of #CS6...
