The new incarnation reminds me of what I call "Candy store" web design from the 2000's. Large images and text to make up for the lack of content. CNN went through a similar phase.
And all of my favourite features have gone.

So glad Carol #Cadwalladr got to write her final piece in the #Observer about her second #TED talk ‘This is what a digital coup looks like’ that took place last week…at the time she gave it and pitched the accompanying piece to new owners #TortoiseMedia it was rejected.
On Radio 4's PM show on Friday, Lord Sumption said many people were misinterpreting the UK Supreme Court's judgement around The Equality Act. He said the judgement means organisations *can* exclude trans women from women's spaces/competitions, but that they are not *obliged* to do so. Yet today's #Observer editorial repeats the compulsory exclusion line.
Personally, I'm gonna try and find time to read the full 87 page judgment.

‘#TED gave me editorial freedom to say what I wanted. The #Guardian/ #Observer won’t even allow me to write about it, in any form.I pitched a piece for this Sunday about the experience.
It would be my last article for the paper, it transfers to #Tortoise next week who have declined to renew my contract; an epitaph to my 20-year career there and an an end point to an investigation that brought the Guardian and Observer extraordinary kudos and the most money it has ever raised from any story.’
This commentary takes a somewhat contrary view from many, but it is a useful reminder that while the US has been great (honestly) in many ways, the darker side has resulted in crap and chaos.
Tisdall's swan song as the Observer gets dismantled?
Some magazine covers are more memorable than others.

Jay Rayner (restaurant critic and food write) has written his last column for Observer Food Monthly, and it's a gem. Everyone, absolutely everyone who eats should read it. https://www.theguardian.com/food/2025/feb/20/jay-rayner-final-ofm-column-buffets-clean-eating-what-not-to-serve-food-on

Excellent, and rather worrying, blog from Carole Cadwalladr. An investigative journalist who I greatly admire. Best known for exposing some of the darker powers behind Brexit, and being greatly punished as a result:
'In 2016, I stumbled on a story about social media, data and ‘fake news’. That led me on a fantastical journalistic journey that turned into the Cambridge Analytica/Facebook scandal and a long-running investigation into Trump, Brexit and Russia. This was a story that was so far above my pay grade, it was unreal. I kept on hoping for a crack team of investigative reporters of the type that you see in the movies to turn up. They never did.
The one big lesson I learned was that investigative journalism = journalism + time. Keeping going is the key. I’m hoping that this newsletter will help in the mission. Help me keep me going. And help me to connect to a network who cares about the same issues that I do.'
