I'm curious to hear what others are #SelfHosting! Here's my current setup:

Hardware & OS

Infrastructure & Networking

Security & Monitoring

Authentication & Identity Management

  • Authelia (Docker): Just set this up for two-factor authentication and single sign-on. Seems to be working well so far!
  • LLDAP (Docker): Lightweight LDAP server for managing authentication. Also seems to be working pretty well!
    #AuthenticationTools #IdentityManagement

Productivity & Personal Tools

Notifications & Development Workflow

  • Notifications via: #Ntfy (Docker) and Zoho's ZeptoMail (#Zoho)
  • Development Environment: Mostly using VSCode connected to my server via Remote-SSH extension. #VSCodeRemote

Accessibility Focus ♿🖥️

Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign#DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!

I've also experimented with:

  • Ollama (#Ollama): Not enough RAM on my Pi.
  • Habit trackers like Beaver Habit Tracker (#HabitTracking): Accessibility issues made it unusable for me.

I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services! 😄

What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

Which note-taking app are you using right now? 🤔

I recently explored different tools to find the perfect fit for my note-taking needs. Right now, I’m using Synology Notes, but I’m missing Markdown support, a feature I find essential for structuring and formatting my thoughts.

I’m torn between Obsidian, Notesnook, and Joplin. Joplin stands out for its sync feature, especially since I can self-host the sync server, which is a big plus for privacy and control. However, the UI feels a bit old-school. Obsidian’s flexibility and plugin ecosystem are fantastic, and Notesnook’s privacy-first approach and simplicity are also appealing.

📓 Which note-taking app do you prefer and why?

Let’s exchange ideas, I’d love to hear your insights!

I decided to ditch Tana and go back Logseq.

Although the experience of using Tana is so delightful, it’s in a proprietary format and online-only. It’s really important to me to have my notes in a format that is easily transferable from one app to another, and always on my drive.

After spending so much time dabbling in note-taking “PKM” (Personal Knowledge Management) apps, it’s funny to me that I just ended up circling back to Logseq.

I love Anytype, Capacities, Twos, etc. but the speed, simplicity, and reliability of Obsidian & Logseq is unmatched tbh.

I'm still not out of the rabbit hole of searching for an #OpenSource #PersonalKnowledgeManagement software. 🐰

I'm gonna give a second try to @zettlr tomorrow! Their docs are *surprisingly* user-friendly and they claim to stick to the pure #CommonMark where probable. It's all the while being nice to researchers with citing, inline usage of #TeXLaTeX, #MermaidJS, and pop-over #footnotes. Provision of the simple #PDF export and #Pandoc customization are welcome, too!

But, to be fair, I may be overexaggerating how good #Zettlr is because of my recent disgust with #VendorLocking. In fact, almost anything that closely follows the common spec and is #FreeSoftware might suffice already. Having something as advanced and closer to the roots is certainly refreshing!

Being #ADHD, I collect note taking apps. My favorite was Evernote, but as with all good things tech, it eventually went downhill. The phone app crashed constantly, they limited the number of devices..it just sucked.

I used Google Keep, OneNote, Simplenote, and could
not get my head around Notion. Recently, I found a thread on #beehaw looking for a OneNote replacement. One of the suggestions was #Notesnook.

Holy sheet! It's Evernote, but better! E2E encryption, zero knowledge policy great phone app.....

I. SO. HAPPY.

Continued thread

Darin Suthapong came up with a minimalistic framework for #NoteTaking with examples in #NoteTakingApps such as @obsidian, #Logseq, etc.

I called these folders uniformly: 📆 Days, 📝 Perms, 🔗 Refs, and 🎯 Hubs. The point worth stressing is that, if you see anything connect, don't hesitate and type a link right where you're standing.

I read somewhere that it is a good idea to make a pinned post with a bunch of hashtags for stuff one is interested in. Well, here are some, in no particular order

#filmmaking #theater #novels #literature #writing #screenwriting #BrazilianMusic #shortstories #WritingApps #NotetakingApps #CrimeStories #horror #ClassicFilms #cinema #pasta #Köln #flâneurie #procrastination #Cafés #Bratwurst #Tangerines #AbandonedPlaces #RandomConversations #Teaching ... (to be continued, possibly)

Replied in thread

@kadin True! I've not used #Evernote but compared to most #NoteTakingApps, I find #obsidian to be the most flexible and the most optimized for long-form writing. Markdown saved directly on my drive? Fantastic. Customizable keyboard shortcuts galore? Love it. The fact that I can have a personal vault and a work vault with key UI tweaks based on what plugins I need for each context? Unprecedented.

Just gotta remember to spend more time writing and less time playing with plugins 😆

EverSticky: Sticky Notes App for Linux that Syncs to Evernote

When it comes to sticky note apps for Linux it’s fair to say we’re spoilt for choice – heck knows I’ve tried most of the ones out there! EverSticky is another open-source sticky notes app for Linux but it has a major difference: it syncs to Evernote, the hugely-popular note taking and task management service. Existing Evernote users will find this a compelling USP as, with minimal effort, it’s easy to take notes and keep them in sync across multiple devices. EverSticky is a Qt-based app created by developer Joey Miller. But it’s fully compatible with most modern Linux desktops :sys_more_orange:
