#NorthernFlicker

Apparently the regular woodpecker namers were on strike or something when they discovered these Northern Flickers, so they they aren't called Black-bibbed Woodpeckers or the Spotty-breasted Woodpeckers, and maybe that's why they don't act much like the other woodpeckers around here. They aren't nearly as shy, and you can often find them just strolling around in the ground pecking at the dirt. I haven't met every woodpecker out there but these are definitely my favorite so far.

First Visitors

The first avian visitors to my birdbath have been a Northern Flicker and a couple of American Robins, although they seemed to be more interested in the adjacent plants than the fountain. One robin actually perched on the rim of the birdbath in order to drink from the drip tray of the nearest plant pot. I suspect they were attracted by the fountain but the hot weather made the still water an easier source of refreshment.

A Flicker in Time

This an aged picture of a northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) who was around during the winter a few years ago.

"Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. On walks, don’t be surprised if you scare one up from the ground. It’s not where you’d expect to find a woodpecker, but flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their unusual, slightly curved bill. When they fly you’ll see a flash of color in the wings – yellow if you’re in the East, red if you’re in the West – and a bright white flash on the rump." - allaboutbirds.org
