Speaking of contrived, the plot revolves around the X-Terminators kids randomly finding the Horn of Proteus, which summons a giant sea monster that attacks their ship. The New Mutants come along and they all team up with Namor to destroy the creature.

I’m getting tired of Dani’s mirage powers being used as a catch-all plot device. Here, Namor wishes that the kids had underwater breathing equipment, so it magically appears. “That’s cause they’re based on an image in the Sub-Mariner’s mind!” It’s contrived.

So that’s how the New Mutants officially resigned from Magneto’s tutelage, while he simultaneous took control of the Hellfire Club. It looks like he’s going down a dark path—or a grey path—but is he ultimately right? Are mutants going to war with humans?!

The New Mutants unanimously express their anger and vehement hatred for Magneto’s choices which they see as evil. And so, Magneto decides…to let them go! They are free to leave, but he predicts that some of them will return someday, and he will welcome them.

We see one more vast difference between Magneto and Shaw: Magneto doesn’t mind if humans are killed, and in fact he celebrated the massive losses caused by Magneto. But Shaw sees humanity as a source of profit to be exploited. (Also, it’s a giant metal hand!)

Magneto goes on to explain his teaching decisions with regards to the New Mutants: Xavier encouraged an empathy for humanity, which Magneto perceived as a weakness. That’s why he ruled over the New Mutants in such a draconian manner, to prepare them for war.

The battle between Magneto and Shaw begins in earnest, and Magneto explains his worldview and his philosophy: “And thus, I began to form my coalition…my power base upon which to build a foundation for control…and peace among our kind.”

Yes, this explanation serves as a brief summary of Inferno, for people who missed it. But more importantly, the New Mutants explain what Illyana means to them, and how deeply her incredible sacrifice affected them. This is how exposition should be done.

I won’t spend much time on the fight with the Hellfire Club, which is fun but brief, but I do like Warlock’s dragon form! But Magneto quickly contains the New Mutants, and now we get the long-awaited conversation between teacher and students!
