Erykah Badu, Worldwide Underground, 2003 on Motown

This was Badu’s third album, following Baduizm (1997) and Mama’s Gun (2000). It was produced by Freakquency (Badu along with Rashad Smith, James Poyser, and RC Williams) and features dead prez (Stic Man and M1) on “The Grind.” Lenny Kravitz guests on guitar, Roy Hargrove on trumpet and vocals, and Queen Latifah, Angie Stone, and Bahamadia guest on “Love of My Life.”

My copy is a recent (2024?) reissue direct from uDiscover music, where the track list on the rear cover actually matches the label and the music (earlier versions did not include the intro and outro). Very happy to find a clean vinyl copy of this record.

I'm at the halfway point and feeling good about it, so let me continue...

Track No. 16 for March 16th from my Netlabel Day Radio 2024 takeover:

Another one from the & still album from Yung Miss. It's that hip-hop/R&B blend in the spirit of Mary J. Blige. Produced by Mr. Ivory Snow, "One Of Those Days" is a criminally short selection, but enough time to showcase the overdubbed layers of Yung Miss beautifully singing against herself.

Track No. 15 for March 15th from my Netlabel Day Radio 2024 takeover:

Here we find Yung Miss, a lyricist and vocalist from California, teaming up with Mr. Ivory Snow from Connecticut for the & still album, a brief listen full of bops from beginning to end. The opening track "No Compass" is cut from neo-soul's cloth, blending a jazzy aesthetic with a hip-hop thump. A great way to get things started.

Featuring collaborations with producers like Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Nicolay, tracks such as "Welcome 2 Syberspace" and "Aquarius Rising" highlight her innovative approach to soul music. A captivating blend of genres and styles.
