“Ontological considerations necessitate an escape from the Newtonian trap of mechanistic simplification, in which epistemology entails and hence swallows ontology. In the pre-Newtonian science that is natural philosophy, a natural system is studied in terms of its existence and essence.”

“Note that the full title of Principia, Isaac Newton’s 1687 masterwork, is Philosophiæ naturalis Principia mathematica (Mathematical principles of natural philosophy). ‘Natural philosophy’ had then been the term used to describe the subject that was the study of nature, while the word ‘science’ had been more specialized and referred to the Aristotelian concept of knowledge, that which was secure enough to be used as a sure prescription for exactly how to do something. John Locke, in An Essay Concerning Humane Understanding (1690) wrote that “natural philosophy is not capable of being made a science”, in the sense that a prescriptive scientific method was too restrictive too encompass the study of nature — an early statement of “not all processes are algorithmic”!”

”Leucippus’ ideas lacked the mathematical rigor and empirical validation of modern scientific theories. However, he grasped the universe’s formation with astonishing foresight. His concept of a spontaneous, physical origin of the cosmos—devoid of divine intervention—laid the groundwork for later scientific inquiry. The notion that the cosmos was not static but rather emerged from an initial chaotic state anticipated the discoveries of centuries to come.“

Was Greek Philosopher Leucippus the First to Propose the Big Bang Theory?

Also unknown birthday: Margaret Lucas Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1623 – 1673), 17th-century English aristocrat, philosopher, poet, scientist, writer, with her imaginary world from her strange sci-fi novel ‘The Blazing World’ which she appended to her treatise ‘Observations upon Experimental Philosophy’. She’s an odd addition to my collection of scientists, as a self-taught, die-hard royalist aristocrat, & 🧵

Guest article by Dipl. Ing. #Jürgen #Uphoff: "#Freedom is not given to us... On the problem of #freedom of will"

I am delighted to have another guest contribution from my esteemed colleague Jürgen on the concepts of a #naturalphilosophy. Another reason to be pleased is that my earlier article "Free Willy - Call of freedom for free will" (philosophies.de/index.php/2023) inspired him to write his essay. Now that's what I call a successful "joint venture" ;-).

@mariapopova If anyone can talk about science and maths and art and life and words as being different facets of the same natural thing, it is her.

She’s the very embodiment of Syntopica.

for e.g. What do relentless persistence, witchcraft, astronomy, mathematics, science fiction, the moon landing and an undying parental love, have in common? Johannes Kepler.

The Marginalian · How Kepler Invented Science Fiction and Defended His Mother in a Witchcraft Trial While Revolutionizing Our Understanding of the UniverseHow many revolutions does the cog of culture make before a new truth about reality catches into gear?

When I first began reading Brain Pickings—eons ago—I would skip her commentary in the “margins” and go straight to the quotes, because that is what I wanted.
Now a days the quotes pale into insignificance as I rush to read what she has to day. If ever there was a case of the frame being more beautiful than the art it contains, it is the Marginalian’s (@mariapopova)

Further to my posts about #philosophy & #ideology.

Someone on #twitter asked about #science. I think science emerges from the meeting of the philosophy & #ideologies until the mid 1800s was #naturalphilosophy. Ideologies guide

- what questions are asked

- resources offered for support

- it's technological, cultural & economic consequences.

These could be said of the relationship between philosophy, ideologies & #religions/#theology
