People know that US science research funding is threatened with gigantic budget cuts right?
My field in physical science is most connected to #nsf and #nasa, where widespread rumors threaten to cut #science #research budgets in half in the president's budget proposal next year. Other agencies like #noaa and #nist #epa #nih, etc are all facing dangerous cuts.
Of course Congress is responsible for the actual budget, and it may see things differently. Still, the president's vision is guiding science agencies' decisions now in responing to guidance for 25-50% staffing cuts in science agencies. Permanent damage may be done before Congress can act.
For science projects which take decades to realize, drastic cuts like this can wipe out the results of decades of investment and can similarly take decades to recover from in affected research areas.
This issue is entirely in addition to concerns about the administration's weaponization of research funding for separate political purposes, as with #Columbia and other universities.
